  • School Board changes meeting date for basketball game.

The local high school Board meeting was changed because it was the same night as the boys basketball game. It wasn't just any game, it is a second round game in the State tournament.

Some folks are saying that the School Board shouldn't do this. I guess they did it because people from the city want to attend the game and support the players as well as the Board members.

Do you think this was a good decision by the Board? Or is it much ado about nothing?

I see both sides. I understand wanting to support the team, but would they do the same if an Academic club made a state competition and there was a conflict? The school and community have always placed sports above academics for as long as i have lived. The school performs very poorly in nearly every measurement academically and I believe the cult of sports is a large factor in this poor performance.

Now if the school had a long tradition of academic excellence I would have no issue with this decision, but given the past history of the school I think this is but another example of placing sports above education..a subtle yet telling decision.

I know anyone who responds isn't getting the full picture as you haven't lived in this town for 48 years and experienced these issues. Just curious on what you think.

    Thanks.

I don't know if that's the way it should be, but that's the way it is many/most towns in this country.

like it or not, a state tournament basketball game is going to have an awful lot of parents, teachers, school board members, etc., attending. if that impacts the ability to have a meaningful school board meeting, i don't see the harm in this. don't read too much into it...

I see your point. I am letting history cloud my judgement on this issue. I would just like to see the school/community at some point realize that what these students need to know is that education is more important than sports. Not sure if that will ever happen though.

It's a fucking school board meeting, they are basically insignificant compared to the basketball team making it to states. I've attended school board meetings and rarely has anything important been on the schedule. At least they didn't outright cancel it.

Should have held it and voted themselves raises.

They should have the school board meeting at halftime at center court.

I guess the school could have petitioned the state tournament to move the basketball game to a different night. I'm sure that would have been no problem.

Academic Clubs like speech and debate, or Mathetes stuff generally aren't spectator events

I agree here... maybe it's a positive for the academics and school board if you get more people attending that otherwise wouldn't because they were at the game.

Board meeting can be held at any time. Sounds to me like a few people on that board have a chip on the old shoulder ... maybe they want to give the town detention and some extra homework

Surely sports cannot be the reason the school is performing poorly academically (unless they are ploughing a hugely disproportionate amount of the schools budget into these programs). Poor teaching, poor management, other local schools draining the talent pool, low income low expectation catchment area, poor parenting, large % of single parent families ... these are the general reasons schools perform below par.

A successful sports team may help give the kids a bit of extra pride in their school, but not having a successful sports will will not make a bit of difference to schools academic performance.

if there's a perception issue re: the importance of academics, in rescheduling the board meeting it should have been clearly communicated when it was being moved to with some statements about it remaining a high priority, while acknowledging the need to support the school in its athletic programs (or something like that).
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

I think i said that the community has always placed sports before academics therefore it is a factor in the poor academics. Sports itself certainly isn't a reason for the poor academics. The culture ingrained that sports is more important than academics is one of the biggest problems.

I doubt that any of the high school kids even know what day the school board meeting is scheduled unless they have a parent on the school board. So, they won't know that it was bumped by the basketball game and they miss the message anyway. As someone said it's a lot easier to reschedule the meeting than the game. And the game will make a few more dollars for the school. The board only spends the dollars.
