The local high school Board meeting was changed because it was the same night as the boys basketball game. It wasn't just any game, it is a second round game in the State tournament.
Some folks are saying that the School Board shouldn't do this. I guess they did it because people from the city want to attend the game and support the players as well as the Board members.
Do you think this was a good decision by the Board? Or is it much ado about nothing?
I see both sides. I understand wanting to support the team, but would they do the same if an Academic club made a state competition and there was a conflict? The school and community have always placed sports above academics for as long as i have lived. The school performs very poorly in nearly every measurement academically and I believe the cult of sports is a large factor in this poor performance.
Now if the school had a long tradition of academic excellence I would have no issue with this decision, but given the past history of the school I think this is but another example of placing sports above education..a subtle yet telling decision.
I know anyone who responds isn't getting the full picture as you haven't lived in this town for 48 years and experienced these issues. Just curious on what you think.
Thanks.
