    ^this.

was a scratch golfer in high school. had a friend that worked at the local course, so we golfed for free. stopped mostly when i went to college, but picked it up again after graduating, and got at least respectable. but then kids came, and getting a weekday evening or entire weekend day to golf was impossible. i sometimes go an entire year now without golfing once, and if i play bogey-golf when i do i consider myself lucky. i can still hit a drive 300-ish, but also spray them all over the place. and i do it with a little tiny old true wood driver from the 80's (Power-Bilt).

I had a set of those. They had a copper bar insert. Beautiful clubs, liked them better than the MacGregor persimmon (which were highly collectable in early 80's).

what should I be looking for in a decent yet not to expensive beginner set of clubs these days. I think I'd like to take some lessons and try playing... given my level of equivocal commitment there.. what would you suggest I look for?

Find a used set at Golfsmith/PGA Superstore or the like. Maybe even a garage sale, something not more than a few years old.
Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!

                Better yet, try 3balls.com.

You want investment cast irons. They are more forgiving and will make the game more fun for you.

Right now on ebay there is a set of Ping Karsten 1's 2-9 iron with pw. They are black dot which means they are set up for straight shots (not draw or fade). They are buy it now at $89.00 This would be an excellent set for a someone just starting out.

I joined a league after taking the last two years off. And by off i mean i hadn't even swung a club in about 30 months.

The course where i golf has 4 9-hole courses and the league rotates between all four. Last night we played the easiest of the 4 and I shot a 42. Had some rust to shake off but overall not too bad.

I did miss playing. Golf is a great sport to play!

                        Nice round.

We were supposed to get our first round in this Saturday, but it is going to be too cold. Probably won't golf for another couple of weeks. Spring golf has to be above 50 degrees and not much wind.

I really need to buy up some new clubs. My irons are at least a decade old --- maybe more. My driver is some no-name brand crap driver (the brand is "420", amusingly). I really need to upgrade and get with the times.
I bought my irons in 1991! I have a Taylor Made driver a few years old. Taylor Made rescue club i picked up at an auction for $10 and it is such a great club. If you don't have a rescue club, get one.

That's a solid round. And so sweet to end with a birdie.

you guys are motivating me to spend some money. I've had my irons since the early 90's as well - titleist, but they're offset clubs ... I have been wanting to try blades for a while now & just saw a set of Macgregors (vfoil) on kijiji, seem to get great reviews ... negotiating now ...
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

I am heading to VA Wednesday to play golf with some friends. We are playing 27 holes each day (Thu-Sat). Hopefully the rain holds out Friday and we can get the round in. Should be alot of fun. I have only played twice this year and haven't been able to hit the range as much as I need.
