I'll do it, but I tend to like mostly post-war jazz stuff, and I'm not a big fan of the swing era ... but it'd certainly be an education. Also I guess the boundaries of Jazz would have to be pretty liberal, especially when you hit the late 60's and 70's.

In more general terms, I was thinking that we could eventually do a Pre-1970 draft, encompassing everything up to that point: Jazz, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Rock and Roll, the 60's. That would complete the full-set. I don't think it'd be wise to do that immediately, we're all a bit drafted out IMO. Also, it'd be cool to re-do the post-2000 draft (it was a long time ago we did that - 2008/9).
I didn't think about staffing issues for a jazz draft...guess I figured there were tons of jazz fans among our ranks.

Agreed with the post-war comment. For some reason, I don't really think about a ton of great artists when I think of jazz. Armstrong, Ellington, Shaw, Goodman, all the vocalists, plus all the Dixieland, swing, etc...I think of them in a different context. I guess I'm a bop baby. Bop, hard bop, cool jazz, modal jazz, west coast, fusion...I could pretty much be happy from 1950 to 1975.

I like the Pre-1970 draft ideal, although for me that would be about as difficult as a 70s draft. There's just too much good stuff. A large number of the artists we picked in the 70s draft did their best work in the 60s.

Anyway, no more 12-hour days or seven-day weeks for me for a while, so I can perhaps make a meaningful contribution to a draft. I'm very sorry I didn't add much to the 70s draft, especially since I love the decade's music so much.

Pretty surprised I was the only one who picked him, but just another example of how deep the 70s are.

I'm totally down for a jazz draft. We could add structure by requiring each era be represented, but I'd prefer a free-for-all.

I'm still hoping for a world music artist draft but it'd probably be very small.
If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

          • At the top of Johnny's and Erik's envy lists, my draft was a success!

                Jazz? Out.
Considering his only baseball post in the past year was bringing up a 3 year old thread to taunt Hornsby and he's never contributed a dime to our hatpass, perhaps?

                  • Can't believe Medusa was taken...that was to be my final round steal.

Still remember when it came out. Blew us away. I've got a funny story about owning the album on 8-track when there is more time.

                        • Mothership Connection puts Lucky into a tie with DMT for most albums picked from my list.

                          • And Zappa for the win. Overnite Sensation is probably his most listenable record, despite Frank himself handling most of the lead vocals. "Montana" and "Dirty Love" have always been favorites.

                            • Happy to finish strong on the Erik-o-meter. Now that I'm off for a few days, I had time to study my picks a little more.

                              • The main reason I didn't take Parliament is that I discovered Funkadelic much earlier and therefore their best stuff is more significant to me than Parliament's; and I didn't want to use picks on both. Also, I had three Funkadelic albums on my list and two of them were taken by others, which forced my hand, whereas there's another Parliament album I like just as much as Mothership but no one took any Parliament until just now.
