  • Back from North Korea--Don't read Bob! ;)

I made it back late last night safe and sound. It really is a safe place to go as long as you follow the rules. Its hard to process everything and put into words. Here are some random observations I have:

-the people were not very friendly. In China, they are curious and friendly towards foreigners, not in NK. I asked a Canadian who lives there if they are taught to hate Americans. He said they aren't directly taught to hate us but that Americans are imperialists and need to be resisted. In fact, one boy another teacher talked to said he wants to be in the army so he can fight off American imperialists.
-many electricity blackouts. You probably knew that. Most last only a minute or two but there were a couple that lasted awhile.
-I was in a city of 200,000 and there were very few cars in the city. Most people walked to where they needed to go even long distances. Also saw a lot of cows pulling carts within the city limits.
-NK does have its beautiful scenery. Living in China, we enjoyed the blue skies and white clouds.
-A limited form of capitalism is there. There is a huge market in town where you can find almost anything you want. Most of it comes from China. The kicker is the income tax rate which is at 71%. Many say that NK now is where South Korea was in late 70's/early 80's with their military dictatorship and limited economy. You could say China in the same time period was about the same. Perhaps, we'll see NK follow in the footsteps of at least China, maybe South Korea?

That's all I have for now. If you are a FB friend, I am starting to post pics so you can check them out.

thx mac, interesting insights into a place few get on-the-ground updates from.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Mike's pictures on Facebook are very cool. I also enjoyed the narrative he was able to put into the numerous pictures.

Not as bleak as I would have imaged, but I was amused that they put a lot of fresh paint on buildings that looked like 1970's architecture, but looked to be built in the late '90's.

i have epiphanies like that all the time. for example i was watching a basketball game today and realized pom poms are like a pair of tits. there's 2 of them. they're round. they shake. women play with them. thus instead of having two, cheerleaders have four boobs.

Thanks guys. A couple other things came to mind.

          1. You cannot get your passport stamped by NK so you have to get a special visa card that gets stamped as you enter and leave NK.
          2. You cannot take photographs of people. I have a few but only by permission or they were from a long distance. In fact, one of our companions was told to delete one photo at the border of a man on a cart being pulled by a bull. They do check your camera when you leave the country.
          3. We had to check in all our books as we entered. However, they did not check our books as we left which the company we were with thought was strange. I guess it doesn't happen that way.
          4. Most of the development in the area is from China and Russia. Rason City port does not freeze in winter so the Chinese and Russians are building ports for their goods. The Chinese also built the road from the border to the city. There are even a couple casinos in the city for tourists. NK residents cannot enter into them.
          5. The food is about the same as South Korea. They love their kimchi in the North.

Oh, another thing, the hotel rooms are bugged. Also, I would equate the NK hotel rooms to about 2 star hotels in America. They were clean but simple. I didn't take a shower for the first two nights due to no hot water.

Also, I know some of you expressed concern as to my safety. NK really is safe. I never felt threatened or in danger anytime while I was in the country. Again, you just need to stick to the rules.

So your private communications are monitored and you are safe as long as you don't "break the rules". Just like America !

It's just a matter of degree, no doubt.
