I was looking at the France river cruise....it was 8 days plus you can add 3 additional days in Paris.

So, just an update for everyone here.

We did not end up going for the weekend.

So, now my wife and I are planning a 7-10 day trip in the fall of 2014.

Based on that info.....it appears that I should look into the vrbo or the airbnb sites for a place to rent.

First question, which area in Paris would be the best area to look for places to rent?

Obviously something that's easily accessible to public transportation would be huge.

      Thoughts?

all neighborhoods are going to be interesting. We stayed in the 2nd, which is the garment district, not traditionally where tourists stay, but centrally located. Things are going to be more expensive the lower the numbers. I'd stay out of the Latin Quarter, unless you want to stay in the busy club area.

          Thanks guys!

Here's one on airbnb that seems nice, fairly inexpensive and close to the Eiffel Tower and many Metro stops.

          Thoughts?

Here's another nice one...just outside of the main area....but the reviews say it's close to the Metro 1 line which goes everywhere.

Heh, I stayed in the Latin Quarter for a couple nights and it was pretty nuts. The place was pretty dumpy and not that cheap, but it was super close to a lot of fun bars and most of the main attractions.

I like this one better than the 2nd one, part of the wonder of Paris is just walking around....

I'm not going to re-read all the recs, so sorry if I'm duplicating.

Last time we went we walked along the North side of the Seine between the louvre and notre dame. Go down the steps from the street level to the lower pathway along the river. Bring take out food and a bottle of whatever you like to drink and have a picnic and people watch. We also took a boatride on the Seine which was fun, but not really a must-do. I like the military museum at Hotel Invalides too. There are lots of possible day trips too, we went to Giverny to see Monet's house and gardens.

You can go to a rooftop terrace which is free (a bar if you want to have drinks) which offers a nice view of Paris, it is at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann. I believe it is behind the opera house. If I think of anything else I'll update you. Enjoy

um, you do know that the Ryder Cup is in Paris next weekend?

for those who don't know, it's the biggest golf event on Earth - held every 2 years, US vs Europe. in recent years it has been epically close most of the time.

US has vaguely familiar names like Tiger, Phil, DJohnson (Gretzky's son-in-law), Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka.

Europe has Sergio, Rory, Justin Rose, Stenson, 2018 British Open champ Francisco Molinari, etc

                        12 vs 12

no matter how little interest you may have in golf, it will be impossible to ignore there next weekend

one other note: for those who picture watching golf on TV as watching paint dry, that's fine. but if you only would tune into one event all year, this is the one.

in Minnesota in 2016, the crowds were absolutely rabid as the US won. Reed and Rory had an epic match - when these guys made a big putt, they literally were screaming yet couldn't be heard about the crowd. and old pros Phil vs Sergio matched birdie after birdie. great stuff

the "home team" is the favorite, so work cut out for the Americans in Paris.

Paris is in upstate New York, near Utica.

it's also in Arkansas, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio - which is weird.

It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.
