  • New Privacy Fence

We just had a stretch of privacy fence installed. It's an 8' tall cedar picket on three 2" x 2" stretchers. The contractor was willing to stain the fence but he wanted to do it as a separate job. His reason is that the wood needed time to dry.

We told him that we could handle that ourselves, but I wanted to get input before we attempted it. Most likely, we will wait until Christmas break and hope for a good weather day between Christmas and New Year.

In any event, this is about 20 feet of new 8' fence. What suggestions do you have?

Use a gel stain. A liquid stain will leave drip marks that you will only see much later on, lol. And then make sure to weatherproof it every couple of years.

Do I need to stain at all or is weathersealant enough?

I would make sure to include peep holes every couple of feet so people can see what is going on behind the fence. People are curious and have a right to know.

We will probably include a gate on the end sot that no one finds out.

That's up to you. If you're just going to weatherproof it, it's much easier. Just get a handheld sprayer capable of spraying weatherproofing liquid and spritz away every couple of years.
