    If i woke up tomorrow with $1 million in my bank account i would be f**king ecstatic!!!!!!

              It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

                I think there's a point of diminishing returns, i.e., if you plot money and happiness it would tend to flatten somewhere around "Comfortable enough to work a job I actually like, not worry about making ends meet, and take my family on a nice vacation once a year." I would happily accept $1 million or $1 billion were it offered to me, and I'd probably even be ecstatic in the short term, but I don't think it would dramatically bend my life happiness curve in the longer term.

                  It would dramatically bend my life happiness curve. Knowing that I could secure the future for my wife, son and daughter would be a joyous thing. I don't think the aspect of being able to purchase a lot of stuff would make a big difference for me, but I'm a lot closer to the end than the beginning.

                  Neither of my kids are pursuing careers which will make much money...she's a high school teacher, he wants some kind of career in music, maybe a band director. They are both brilliant, and could be rocket scientists, but Alice and I have always let them follow their heart. Setting up a trust with some extra monthly income for them would be nice.

                        I'm with you until the last phrase. Having inherited a decent chunk of change a few years ago from the one relative I had who had money, I can tell you that I may not be happier (however that's defined), but I have far fewer worries now. I don't have to worry about who gets paid this week, I can relax more, take a vacation, and most importantly, work just as hard while knowing I don't HAVE to take guff from anyone. I can say, "F*** it" and walk out, go home, pack a backpack, and head to Europe for six months or a year IF I'm so inclined. I can donate money to worthy charities, and I've done it (those who don't ask are likelier to receive). I can help out good people who are in a short-term bind, and I've done it. I've also seen the true colors of many people, good and bad.

                        Now, does that constitute happiness? I don't know, but there's certainly less stress and more contentment now. I've found that while it may or may not buy happiness, having some cash in the bank and market buys a good amount of freedom.
