  • Email account scam/hack question

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions to fix a problem one of our friends has with her email account. I received what I knew was a spam email from her account that read:

My regrets for this sudden request, On my trip to Manila Philippines. I got mugged and all my belongings cash, cellphone and credit cards were all stolen at "gun point".It's such a traumatic experience for me.i need your help flying back home as I am trying to raise some money.i have made contact with my bank but the best they can do is to mail me a new card which will take 2-3 days to arrive here.I need you to lend me some money to sort my self out of this predicament, will pay back once I get this over with.($1850) is all i need or you can help me with any amount you can afford.
WU is the fastest option to wire funds to me. Let me know if you need my details(Full names/location) to effect a transfer.
I'm freaked out at the moment.

The reply email was close to her actual email with one letter missing. When I forwarded the email to her to make her aware, she became spastic because her entire email account has disappeared - nothing in her inbox, deleted, or sent.

Other than setting up a new email account, is there anything she can possibly do?
    Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Does she really want to hold on to that email address? She can contact the provider and they'll work with her.
Well she's a certified dog trainer and most of her emails and contacts are from clients. I'm sure she could change her email slightly to ensure no other issues.

When that happened from my email account i changed the password and it solved the problem.

She should get a gmail account and set it up with authenticator so even if they have your address and password, if it is from another computer that isn't recognized, you have to enter in a 6 digit authentication code that randomizes every sixty seconds and it is on your phone.

Okay guys thanks. She might stop over after work tonight for me to check her account. When she changed her PW, I sent an email to her to see if she could pick it on her phone. She did and replied. However, the 'reply to' email address was the address with the one letter missing like I mentioned above.

Stopping over to check her account...... so thats what its called now.. Got it.
It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years and we must stop it.

LOL guys. Her yahoo login and email was hacked at noon from Nigeria. All of her contacts and emails were deleted and the bogus 'reply to' email addy was added. We deleted the bogus addy and filed the restore request with yahoo to restore her data. So her account will be in good standing.

In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Holy crap...brutal story. I only found out and used the gmail authenticator because my gmail got hacked, my address spammed with a plea for money due to "me" being mugged in London and the hacker was IMing Kevin Seitzer asking for money. Luckily, KS had my cell and texted me asking if I was in London...

My hotmail acct was also hacked (it was the alternate email) but I basically stopped using it except as a sign up email. Getting hacked was an inconvenience but when I heard from Seitzer that he was chatting with the hacker, that was scary...

I've had no problems since getting the authenticator for gmail two years ago...

Oh, and my 1000th post... Hi Steve!
