You seem to infer some nefarious intent on my part. I read a news article and a blog that aligned with my general view about empowering and respecting women's/parent's choices, including around the charged issue of breast feeding, and I assumed that those sources were accurately reporting on the provisions of the initiative. I concede that unless there's some other document out there describing the components of the initiative, I was misled and I disseminated the misleading information to others.

You hit pretty well on many of the issues - note the timing of the edits to the city posted documents (as has been found by a couple of enterprising bloggers), and you were pretty close to the truth.

That being said, it's not surprising at all. Emporer Bloomburg knows what's best for your health, and you damn well WILL have it!

I don't think anyone is arguing with the position that breast feeding is best for the health of the baby in the vast majority of cases (i.e., when there isn't a legitimate problem with the mother's milk production or the baby's ability to suckle). Any more than one would argue that giant containers of sugary soda are bad for you. The question was whether certain aspects of this initiative went beyond educating and empowering women to make the best choices for themselves and their babies. Women should be free to make an informed choice to formula feed their babies and that choice, once made, should be respected. In the currently posted City documents, it would appear that this initiative may not unduly restrict women's choices in the ways that many of the media reports suggested, except perhaps to the extent that a woman who has chosen to formula feed but who hasn't brought formula and a baby bottle to the hospital might not be able to get formula or a bottle from the hospital.

It has been far too long since we had a lengthy thread about boobs.

              Pics?

Ah, I get it. Despite every ob/gyn I know and dealt with during our kids constantly lecturing my wife and I about "breast is best" and having it reinforced throughout the entire hospital stay, Darth Similac somehow, someway, has magical Jedi powers to overcome the weak-minded Jabba Yorkians by including a free package of powdered formula in the go home package. This awesome mind-bending dark Jedi power must obviously be overcome by the master of light, Obi-Michael Bloomwalker, with an imperial decree that all thoughts of the evil Darth Similac must be quashed.

The depth of nanny-state arrogance in NY is mind-boggling.

And you wonder why I'm skeptical about national health care. Bloomberg's living, breathing proof of the reality of a slippery slope argument.

By the way, marijuana's bad for you, too. Should Bloomberg ban that, also?

Not sure which way it all leans, but there are a lot of folks in NYC who receive little if any prenatal care and who therefore probably aren't sitting down with an OB/GYN multiple times over the course of their pregnancy.
