iPad killer? ... I have already pre-ordered one ... for only £159 ... why not.

The specs are extraordinary for a flagship device (at that price):

    7" screen
    HD LCD 1280 x 800 px
    Pixel Density 216 ppi
Quad Core Tegra 3 1.3 GHZ
    Dedicated 12-core GPU
    1 GB RAM
    8/16GB storage
    Front facing Camera
No SD slot ... but a micro USB connection included.

Latest unskinned version of Android 4.1

    All for $199

Looks like Google have decided to properly got to war with Apple. Consumer wins.

Google have never marketed real world devices well ... if they can manage to buck that trend, there will be some very edgy Apple execs.

Definitely not an iPad killer and I don't think they are trying to be. The Nexus profiles more as competition for the Kindle Fire.

The rumor is that Kindle Fire is planning on announcing their new version towards the end of July and I think that will ultimately tell the tell as to how successful the Nexus7 will be.

At the same price point, I've been pretty impressed in my limited use of my wife's Kindle Fire.

Nexus v Fire is not much of a contest:

In terms of device v device ... iPad clearly wins. iPad still the class of the field.

In terms of value of money ... Nexus 7 wins hands down with those specs and a massive $300 difference in price with the iPad ... and presumably more with the Microsoft Surface.

The Fire was an OK device, but the Amazon skin was a deal breaker for me.

        exactly.

iPad killer was the wrong thing to say, it's too good a device to ever be killed outright ... but I'm willing to bet that this is the beginning of the end of Apple's complete domination of the tablet market. The iPad currently has 60-65% (I thought it was more) ... I'm willing to bet that Android will have 60-65% within 2 years.

That 60-65% market share didn't seem right ... a high% of the other 35-40% are basically junk Android devices with garbage resistive touchscreens. The iPad has more like a 75-80% share of the real tablet market.

The market share studies my company has done puts the ipad at 80% with the kindle fire at #2, but this focused on the us market

It doesn't matter what you think about the Apple versus the world debate ... these patent wars are frankly ridiculous. How can you claim patent on a common form factor? The iPad didn't present any fundamental design that wasn't already out there (it just did it better that the rest). It's a tablet FFS ... what can you do with a freakin tablet? Easyjet (Euro low cost airline) tried to patent the colour orange so it couldn't be used by another airline. Companies buying other companies just to acquire patent rights so they have more legal leverage.

After getting a hold on the sale Samsung Galaxy Tab, Apple have yesterday got the same ruling on the Galaxy Nexus (phone) ... citing that Samsung is copying the looks and feel of their product. I guess some other folks need to get into this patent free for all:

                  Compac TC1000 (2003)

Stick a button where the HP logo is and make it black? Voila ... PATENT!

Hmmmm, I went to Amazon to check it out here in the US and couldn't find it. Different name maybe? Or early UK release?

Most the the stuff I've read has been from US sources ... looks like it's called the Nexus 7 everywhere:

                      "Tablet set for mid-July launch"

I wonder will amazon stock it

Amazon apparently isn't stocking it. At least as of yet.

Gamestop is offering a nice perk for pre-orders of the Nexus 7. Anything you trade in gets 30% additional trade in value if it's used toward the pre-purchase of a Nexus 7.

This is the best responses I've seen to these nonsense patent disputes going around now:

Appeals Court Judge Richard Posner basically told Apple and Motorola to fk off and stop wasting the courts time. Unfortunately that was last week ... this week another judge has decided that it's OK to waste the courts time so that Apple and co. can block off their competition. Apple are definitely the worst offenders, but they are all at it ... or they feel they need to be at it. It's an absurd abuse of the system IMO. Basically boils down to frivolous lawsuits to temporarily block out the competition. Bull****. Some of the judges who have been ruling on these cases around the world are utterly clueless about patent law ... or they are on the books. The Australian judge who blocked a Samsung product last year was attacked pretty fiercely by the Appeals Court judge who threw the case out.

                            More on the patent nonsense:

Apple has been defeated at the High Court by the Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC over a series of patent infringement claims, including around the iPhone’s "prize" slide-to-unlock patent.

The iPhone slide to open has been found to be an infringement of an HTC patent. Really??? Why is that is patentable in the first place??? Apple is of course bringing all this on themselves ... I think at some point they started to believe their own hype. I don't even understand these frivolous cases ... (1) these things should not be patentable in the first place. It's just wrong. (2) They should be happy to have taken a massive jump on the market in two massive fields, and adjust to the changing landscape rather than try and stymie the competition.

Finally got one of these. Excellent little device. Because it's for casual use, I definitely prefer the 7" form factor to the 10" ... will be interesting to see what Apple offer with their proposed 7" iPad. These smartphones and tablets are quickly reaching their limits.
