    Not shocking but still disgusting.

A whopping 96% of main entrees sold at top U.S. chain eateries exceed daily limits for calories, sodium, fat and saturated fat recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, reports the 18-month study conducted by the Rand Corp. and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

That article is just the gist of the problem with sugar.

If you guys want to really educate yourself, check out Dr. Robert Lustig's (UCSF) lecture on sugar and the evil that it is.

Yeah, it's pretty funny watching these "high fructose corn syrup is okay in moderate amounts!" ads that are running on tv. I think we're just starting to scratch the surface of exactly how bad processed foods are for you. I'm not as extreme as Michael Pollan but I do generally try to follow the philosophy of "if my great-grandparents couldn't have eaten this (i.e. it's "food" invented in a lab), I probably shouldn't be eating it, either." Sugar, processed foods, and enormous portion sizes are a pretty massive problem in this country right now and the fact that the FDA is in bed with so many major food manufacturers (and pharmaceutical companies, obviously) only makes it worse and more confusing.

        Except, then there's this:

While the study did not say what the equivalent might be for a human to consume as much high-fructose corn syrup as the rats did, researchers said it provides some evidence that metabolic syndrome can affect the mind as well as the body.

"Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think," said Gomez-Pinilla.
So, for all we know, the lab techs fed the rats levels of HFCS that wouldn't even be consumable by humans. The fact that they were unwilling to disclose what the equivalent quantities were is pretty disturbing since it's almost undoubtedly true they had the information.

Beyond "eat less and exercise more", I'm highly skeptical of any of these food gurus claims. I could provide a stack of well-certified researchers who believe the answer is low carb, high protein and fat diets. And another group who believe moderate carb, low fat is the answer. Another group who's sure vegetarianism is the only answer.
I'm just here for the baseball.

Yeah, people really should take more personal responsibility for educating themselves about nutrition and physical fitness, and acting on that information that is very readily available to everyone.

Americans are gluttons let's face it. I always comment to my wife about how ridiculously large entrees are when we go out to eat. Sure I eat half and take the rest for the next day, but i guess most people feel the need to scarf down all 5000 calories right then and there.

How about restaurants cutting down on portion sizes?

            And sugar is f**king EVIL!

But none of them would be advocating high fructose corn syrup or sugar as part of a good diet.

But our great-grandparents' generation had a much shorter life-span so I'm not sure how that argument holds up. I certainly agree that processed foods should be kept to a minimum.

Given our country's refusal to take a sensible approach to health-care reform, this epidemic truly could be the final undoing of our great country. Health care costs are going to continue to soar over our lifetimes and the system is eventually going to become completely overwhelmed.

Yep, that's what we do. Another thing I would like to see is the airlines get some balls and start charging us airfare based on the combined weight of our bodies and bags. Total weight is the only variable that affects how much we cost the airlines to transport us, so it is completely ridiculous that a 250-pound person with a heavy bag can pay the same amount for a ticket as a 2-year-old with a small backpack. Southwest had it blow up in their face when they just tried to charge a 'fat tax' but if they all started charging by weight and explained the rationale behind it, I think the backlash could be minimized. Or is the fat lobby in this country that strong?

Maybe if people started seeing more immediate consequences of their obesity they'd make a greater effort to reduce themselves.

                        It certainly doesn't help.

                          What's your point?

Mine, as I've clearly stated is that refined sugar is terrible for you.

And as one who is well versed in nutrition and exercise ... the reason there are different groups of well-certified researchers is because the kind of diet a person should follow is dependent on contextual goals. But all can agree that refined sugar is sh!t.

Certainly not as a majority of one's diet. Others don't care if some is consumed, some consider sugar the root of all culinary evil. As Sheep implied (I believe) using readily available information to figure out that drinking a 2-liter bottle in one day of Mountain Dew is bad for you is pretty easy to figure out, while having an occasional 12-oz can isn't bad.

We can't have government-provided healthcare and simultaneously disassociate consequences from behavior. It can't work.
