  • Giorgio Chinaglia, RIP

even the most passive soccer fans know Chinaglia from his days with the Cosmos....RIP

"Former Italy, Lazio and New York Cosmos star Giorgio Chinaglia has died of complications from a heart attack, his son said. The Italian football great was 65.

Chinaglia died Sunday at his home in Naples, Florida, his son, Anthony, said through family friend Charlie Stillatano, who was Chinaglia's co-host on a Sirius XM radio show.

Chinaglia was the all-time leading scorer in the North American Soccer League after previously starring with Lazio.

Lazio also announced the death. Chinaglia lived in the U.S. since facing accusations in Rome of involvement in an organized crime group that allegedly tried to buy Lazio in 2006."

Man, I loved me some Cosmos during the '80s. We had season's tickets for several years overlapping with Chinaglia's NASL scoring prime. RIP #9.

From everything I hear the Cosmos are coming back ... though I suspect that they won't have a Pele-type player in their ranks ... although with the success of the MLS, I wouldn't put it past them to try and bring in another Beckham to help them hit a tipping point.

Listened to his XM radio show every morning on my commute, he was on last week but sounded awful, they made it sound like he had the flu.

The Cosmos coming back to MLS is far from a sure thing, the league would love to have a 2nd NY team, but right now they are a bunch of clowns selling shirts. No money, no stadium plans, no team.
