The Ft Hood shootings have been classified as workplace violence. This is certainly true, but by limiting the definition in this fashion, the shooting victims cannot be awarded Purple Hearts. Since the shooting was a political statement and the targets were active duty soldiers performing their duties, I see a good case for classifying it as enemy fire.

On a side note, I was at the site of the shootings in December. The building looks almost exactly as it had when I was there six years before. It is a gym, that is converted to processing soldiers for overseas deployment. Anyone who has registered for college classes would find the layout familiar, except that many of the stops have medical techs drawing blood or giving injections.

    If wiki can be trusted:

Per United States Army regulation 600-8-22, the Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services after April 5, 1917, has been wounded or killed.
