I hear it's hard to get a photo ID. Better not burden people and require them to prove who they are.

All of these "anti-fraud" laws are such a load of crap, guys-- they're an "answer" to a problem that nobody has ever shown to exist on anything like a meaningful level. They're just press hits, nothing more.

Even if all this is true, what relevance? It is a common sense approach to a potential issue, and it is hardly a burden. You have to show a photo ID to rent videos.

But it seems that the only reason they are putting the law is place is because research has shown that a third of the minorities don't have an ID and history has shown that minorities will vote Democratic. So this has nothing to do with anything other than trying to block minorities (Democrates) from voting. That's unbelievably un-American if you ask me, which is odd cause I thought Republicans were always all about the American way. Perhaps it's their American way that they care about.

Here is what you have to do in FL now to get a license:

Govt Issued birth certificate, passport, or naturalization card. Puerto Rican certificates must be issued after 7/1/10.
Social Security Card or a W-2 form or a paycheck, or a SSA-1099, or non-SSA-1099 showing your complete SS#. No photocopies accepted
Your government-issued marriage certificate or court-ordered name change
Two documents showing your residential address

Puerto Ricans voted strongly Democratic in the last 3 elections so getting #1 on the law was rather convenient here in FL by the GOP-controlled legislature. They send you this post-card outlining these rules 90 days before your license expires.

Who rents videos? I don't provide my license to sign up for Netflix

The only thing I have to provide an ID for is to get on an airplane, but flying is a privilege, not a right. I've talked to people here in Florida that want it so that only people that OWN homes or property can vote because they're the ones directly affected, not the renters.

Is voting taken too lightly by many? Yes

Should backdoor poll taxes be put into place? Hell no

This kind of crap is why I just can't stomach being a Republican any more.

So are you still a Republican?

No, I don't know what I am, but I can't bring myself to associate with the Republican party since Bush/Cheney.

I am a registered Democrat, but like you i don't really know what i am as far as political parties go.

In Texas, you are "registered" which with whatever party's ballot you chose to vote in the preceding primary election. Since I voted in the Democratic presidential primary, until the next election, I'm "registered" as a Democrat. This time around I'm thinking about voting the Republican primary ballot. Neither choice particularly expresses an allegiance or has any impact beyond that, other than putting me on a different list for fundraising calls and letters.

Florida functions like Texas in that manner. Registered independents cannot vote for Presidential candidates in the primaries.

Well, this is gonna get mighty, mighty interesting. AG Holder has denied preclearance of the SC Voter ID law, claiming it's discriminatory. SC is apparently going to not merely challenge Holder's ruling to a three-judge DC panel and request expedited SCOTUS review if turned down - not merely on the ID law, but on Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.

Texas doesn't have registered independents. You can vote in whatever primary you want. You just can't vote in more than one party's primary in a given election season.
