  • What's Your Highest Level of Education?

    There have been some comments surrounding education here in the Bar lately, and I'd love to get an idea of what the actual level of education is here in the community.

    i have epiphanies like that all the time. for example i was watching a basketball game today and realized pom poms are like a pair of tits. there's 2 of them. they're round. they shake. women play with them. thus instead of having two, cheerleaders have four boobs.

    I'd note that a Juris Doctor is probably the easiest doctorate degree out there to get, and that I laugh at the handful among my fellow lawyers who think that we should use the Doctor title like PhDs or MDs, or maybe worse, insist on suffixing their name with Esq.

      I have a Masters degree in Library Science, but to echo B Fly's comment, it isnt the most difficult Masters degree out there.

        Master's in Child Clinical Psychology and Public Policy.

          I completed all of my course work and comprehensive exams for a Masters in Communication. My adviser for my thesis went off the rails when she went on sabbatical, and she became more of a roadblock than a helper in writing the thesis.

            Two bachelor's degrees:

            1) BS in Advertising & Marketing, University of Illinois - This is the one I got when I was young and stupid and had no earthly clue what I wanted to do with my life.
            2) BS in Computer Science, Denver Technical College - This is the one I got later when I started a family and needed some real money to support them.

              Hmm, I'd contend my field is a contender to beat your JD for easiest doctorate to get. My PhD is in English. My focus was new media studies. I got to play narrative driven video games as "research" for my dissertation.

                I would not have guessed that I'm one of the less educated junkies.
                In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

                      It's not that, though I did, but at the time I said that having a bachelor's was definitely in the lower half of the table, and I didn't realize that fantasy sports skewed that hard toward the educated. Maybe it's just this board though.

                        My thought was that the JD is easiest because there is no dissertation requirement at all, and, if you so choose, you can largely get away without having to do any research or papers. You basically just have to take a 3 hour in class test or 24-48 hour take home test at the end of each course, depending on the professor, and you're finished in three years. (The Bar Exam is independent of the JD.)

                              I was the opposite - drank nothing in high school and then slowly but steadily increased my alcohol consumption through college and law school. By third year of law school, I was pretty much drinking from Thursday evening right through Sunday afternoon every week outside of sleep breaks from 4am-11am. My drinking plummeted to practically nothing after I got married and had kids. Ah...higher education...I miss it so.
