  • How many of you know what a Davenport is (without looking it up)?

It is a term I haven't heard for years, but knew exactly what it was when I heard it.

My Grandma and Grandpa used the term.

I asked my wife (who is 9 years younger than me) if she ever heard of or knew what it was. She said no but guessed old car.

It made me curious if any of you have ever heard of or know what a Davenport is.

It ranks up there with the ottoman.
It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years and we must stop it.

That's an old-timey name for a sofa, right?
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."

You are correct. I knew it as another name for sofa or couch. As it turns out it was a manufacturer of sofas whose name was Davenport. It was the equivalent of Kleenex for tissue in the furniture world.

Get your dirty Kleenex off the Davenport!

My grandmother always called it a davenport. In her 88 years I do not think I ever heard her call it anything but a davenport. As a kid I was more confused wen I heard it called a couch or sofa.

A davenport potato sounds so much more sophisticated.

High end prostitute's name for a blowjob?
Considering his only baseball post in the past year was bringing up a 3 year old thread to taunt Hornsby and he's never contributed a dime to our hatpass, perhaps?

                            Hmmph.

Every football fan knows a Davenport is taking a dump in a closet. I can't believe anyone thought it was a sofa.
I'm just here for the baseball.
