I don't think the show was suppose to be as funny after Trapper and Henry left.
While MASH was pissed at McLean Stephenson for a contract issues, they made a statement about war when they killed of his character. I think the producers realized they had a sho that could be grounded in comedy, but still turn serious and people would accept it.
I love MASH, but i have a hard time watching the first couple season, as I never thought the characters developed like they did after those two left."Looks like I picked a bad day to give up sniffing glue.

i have epiphanies like that all the time. for example i was watching a basketball game today and realized pom poms are like a pair of tits. there's 2 of them. they're round. they shake. women play with them. thus instead of having two, cheerleaders have four boobs.
