Not just "on for three seasons," but canceled by NBC in the middle of its third season.

But then it became ubiquitous in syndication, which fueled the demand for the movies, which in turned fueled the demand for the subsequent series.

By all accounts he was truly a mensch, a rarity in Hollywood. RIP.

I was reading that creator Gene Roddenberry did an unreleased pilot that had Spock in it. NBC wanted a remake, with Spock out. Roddenberry came back with Spock in, and all of the other original characters replaced. NBC never liked the show, which was more attuned to changing U.S. culture than NBC was......

When I was in Law School ('78-'81), Roddenberry did a speaking tour and came to Fayetteville. He packed Barnhill Arena, which was the basketball venue, and I remember him talking about the very thing Judge Jude posted above. When I was in college (Fall '74 to Spring '77), we would watch Star Trek every weekday afternoon in the lobby of the dorm before going over to the mess hall. It was a ritual.

Erik is spot on. Even after being cancelled, it never went away. It stayed in the public consciousness like no other franchise I can think of at present.
