It's Back: Exceelent Movies I've Seen Lately

I'm certainly going to see it, Johnny's review will help temper my expectations...always a good thing.

Christopher Nolan has yet to make a less-than-great movie IMO and has attained the status that I will see his films in the theater just because they're his.

Dark Knight Rises was a damn fine movie --- not as good as the Heath Ledger's Joker Batman, but that was one of the best movies I've ever seen so it's tough to compare.

But, hey, if you want to get movie advice from a handball and field hockey watching drunk Irishman with horrible taste in music, that's your prerogative.

Seriously, it's a fine movie.

I normally really like quality popcorn action movies ... but lately I've been swimming against the tide. I disliked Hunger Games as well, and all the critics seemed to love that. I avoided Dark Knight reviews because I knew I was going to see it on the big screen either way, and the trailers looked great ... so I went in expecting a much better experience ... maybe that was why it seemed so poor.

Looking forward to the Bourne Legacy next week ... and there seems to be a few more decent looking action thrillers coming up.

Ted ... meh ... some good laughs. Thought it was OK but could have been better. Weird combination of kids movie acting & scripting with foul language, but without any of the subtle humour of American Dad.

The Bourne Legacy .. top notch stuff. Best action thriller I've seen in ages. Fits nicely in with the rest of the series without forcing anything. Intelligently put together, no glaring plot holes or storyline leaps of faith. You won't roll your eyes once. Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz are excellent as usual. And a terrific trademark rooftop chase / car chase.

I'm bewildered by these review ratings lately. RT only gives The Bourne Legacy 53%, while the crappy Dark Knight Rises gets 87%, and the mediocre Ted gets 70%.

IMO a very solid 8.5/10

Totally ... I think I'm going mad sometimes.

I think maybe we've been spoiled by the quality of these cable TV shows. Really tough for a 2 hour movie to match the depth and intensity of these series.

I'd like to go see the new Bourne movie, too, even without Matt Damon. The Bourne trilogy was a really awesome set of movies, despite departing from the books so massively. The Ludlum book trilogy count among the best spy books I've ever read, especially the first one, The Bourne Identity. Cool that both, although they're so different, made such great trilogies.

"The Bourne Identity" is one of my top 10-15 books.

saw American Reunion last night. Some decent laughs, but they felt some need to trot out all the characters -- many of whom just had cameos -- it was kinda like the new Dallas tv show: "Hey, this person hasn't worked since the last American Pie movie!"

Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows was a complete mess, with tiresome slowed-down/sped-up CGI scenes, a plot that needs 100% of your attention to follow, and poor character development. It takes place in 1891, yet it has technology that clearly wasn't developed yet, making it reminiscent of the bomb Wild Wild West.

I left the theater disappointed. After a few days thinking about it I think the movie itself is good but expectations were higher due to the quality of the 3 Damon movies. This one wasn't that good but was good.

It was just nice to see a movie that didn't have glaring plot holes and that made sense. I made the mistake of watching Battleship over the weekend. Utter rubbish.

Saw 'Boy in the Striped Pajamas'. Very good flick. Won't give out lots of details but the picture on the cover shows one boy inside a concentration camp and one boy outside the fence. So it isn't a lighthearted movie. But it was done very well and focused on the two boys and their understanding of what was going on at that time.

I just watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi and what a cool documentary. Aside from the storyline and the subplots, which were definitely interesting. The documentary also serve as sushi porn. Everything the dude made looked so damn delectable.

Lawless ... well crafted movie, ticked most of the boxes as far as quality is concerned. The ending felt a bit underwhelming though, and there were plot lines just left hanging. I know it was a true story, but they could have took a bit more licence to create a more complete experience. Tom Hardy was excellent ... his performance alone would have made the movie worth watching. He's quietly building an impressive resume for himself ... he should move into the big leagues when he takes over the role of Mad Max.

Some other's I've seen lately:

Avengers ... not a fan of comic book movies, but I enjoyed this. I really enjoyed Thor as well, and in many respects this is a sequel to that movie.

Men In Black 3 ... if you enjoyed the first 2, then you'll enjoy this. Pretty good threequel. Not much else to say ... solid family popcorn action movie.

Total Recall ... started off well, fell off in the middle part, and ended a bit unsatisfactorily. I wouldn't be worried about missing this one in the cinema, although the SFX were good. The one saving grace was Kate Beckinsale as the badass company hit girl ... she showed some sick kung fu skills. She's 39 now, but she looked better in this movie than I can ever remember.

Killing Them Softly - thought this was exceelent. Very slow paced, almost old fashioned film making. Some impressive use of slow-mo super high def camera work in the violent scenes. There's a very cynical political undertone (that's not so "under") contrasting the bull**** rhetoric of election year with the economic realities ... comes together nicely at the end. Not very subtle, but effective.

Looking forward to Looper next week ... that looks interesting.
