I am sure U.S. wont accept this, it just looks too bad for trump to accept help even though it would save lifes. Save face vs lives lost is easy equation for trump, hope i am proven wrong and we can start utilizing these.

so this is where we rely on the super wealthy to help where it was the governments job to do in the first place.

Massachusetts is panicking now. i can confirm that supermarkets have been cleaned out. lines are forming outside stores. hospitals won't allow visitors inside. i should've made some more food runs before.

but hey, the richest 1% that own all the wealth will take care of everything. their efforts will trickle down and help everyone like voodoo economics.

    • The partisan divide in perceptions of this pandemic is just awful. Fox News is fucking poison.

Look at Italy - the whole country is shut down. No one is working, no one is travelling there, no one is getting paid. How long will that last? How will the Italian government be able to support itself, as well as paying its global debt obligations? Britain is no longer in the EU. Germany has its own problems. Who will help out Italy? No one.

In the US, it's just starting. Large gatherings are being cancelled. Lots of tourist dollars lost. Business that have an international presence will be getting killed on overseas sales, as well as imports. Then they won't be able to pay their staff and will start layoffs. And why not, headcount is up anyway. Other companies will absorb large amounts of sick time and see production plummet.

Once it starts to impact here in the US, who will be going to restaurants, stores, malls, bars, amusement parks, gyms, wherever? Who would want to travel now, both here and abroad? The travel industry -- airlines, cruises, hotels, and all of its periphery industries -- will get killed. It's not so much the fear of getting sick, but the fear of getting stuck.

How many mom&pop shops will get destroyed because of a lack of tourism?

Even with the sports cancellations, think of all those affected -- the staff, paid by the game; the concession hawkers, etc. No need to advertise at the arena if there ain't no one showing up. All that revenue lost. Great, the teams still get TV revenue, but how does the guy selling beers make money? Unemployment will shoot up because of the "gig" economy getting punched in the gut.

Hopefully things get back to normal in a few weeks or a couple of months, but who knows?

I hope it doesn't play out like this, but what's to stop it?
I posted this just 4 days ago, and that seems like an eternity ago.

The odds of a recession is almost a certainty, and it's now certain to be severe. What's not certain is how long it will last. It's too early to toss around the "D" word, but if Americans continue to not take this seriously, that's always a possibility as well.

yeah, it's amazing that the level of political partisanship is so high that some/many republicans feel obligated to take the pro-plague position because their opponents are on the other side.

In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

              • A bit more reassuring analysis.

In recent weeks a number of alarming stories have circulated suggesting that "You're Likely to Get the Coronavirus," as an article from the Atlantic put it. That story reported that Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch predicted that "some 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected...

                    • Another update. Last stats were from 3/13 at 8:08 AM, so only about 2 1/2 days ago:

                      - 3719 cases in US, up from 1832, a 103% increase. That's a much bigger increase than even last time and in a shorter period of time.
                      - 68 deaths in US, up from 41, a 66% increase, which again is a bigger increase than last time in a shorter length of time. 12 states have reported deaths from the virus, w the majority being in Washington state.
                      - 49 states, plus DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Is., now have coronavirus cases. West Virginia is the only state w/o a known case.
                      - 170,533 cases worldwide, up from 138,517, a 23% increase which again is a bigger increase than last time in a shorter length of time. 89,518 of these are outside of mainland China, which for the first time today is more than the cases in China. This is a 55% increase, which is about the same as what I estimated the last increase to be, but this time it was in a shorter period of time.
                      - 6520 deaths worldwide, up from 5082, a 28% increase which is a slightly larger increase than last time. 3307 deaths are outside of China, up from 1906, a 74% increase which is a much smaller increase than last time. For the first time today, there have been more reported deaths outside China than inside.
                      - 158 countries/territories/etc. have confirmed cases w suspected cases in at least 2 others, up from 133. So, close to 3/4 of the world's countries have at least 1 case.

Bottom line is the outbreak appears to be continuing to escalate at an increasing rate, altho lack of testing and incompleteness of reporting make the actual progression hard to determine.

if you have unlimited data on your phones, stay off the home internet - or just turn off some of the phones if possible

                              • As we are entering an epic shutdown of the US and the world we're facing decisions that we do not think about normally everyday. For I recently retired so I can stay home but being over 60 and had minor stroke last year with high blood pressure I do worry if I have to go out. Of course me and the wife takes the necessary precautions but I was thing about getting a simple haircut today. The though of the barber touching my head, the haircuts that he/she cut before and the fact that the person would be close to me. My decision is let me hair grow out until it is consider safe. That just one tiny aspect of the fallout from this virus. I'm curious as to how your life is being impacted?
