People close to fmr. President Obama say he has been keeping close tabs on the 2020 presidential race and say the signal has been sent in the past 36 hours that he sees Biden as the candidate to back.
Obama phoned Buttigieg immediately after he dropped out and told him that he needed to consider how to best use his leverage at this time.

      • It's Super Tuesday, so remember to vote for Biden but if you don't vote for Biden vote for the other Biden, but just make sure the other Biden is actually on the ballot.

After the MayorPete and Klobuchar defections, 538.com's "Who Will Win the Election" now has either Biden or the other Biden surging past Bernie. Once Bloomberg drops out, which should be tomorrow, the moderate vote is totally consolidated, and once the endorsement comes from Obama, Biden's surge should be in full swing.

          • OK all you Biden people and all you Bernie people:

If your candidate doesn't get the nomination, will you work to ensure that the nominated candidate wins in November?

I'm for Biden, but if Bernie is the nominee then I will be a Bernie backer to the max in November.

            How about others?

It would be a shame if Trump gets to burn it all down for another four years because some Democrats can't back a "Socialist" or because others can't abide an "Establishment" candidate.

I will vote for whichever breathing -- or non-breathing-- human being wins the Democratic nomination.

I am admittedly terrified that your prediction could come true. It's all about narrative, so if Bernie wins 10/15 states and leads in delegates, it will be harder for media to ignore Bernie's broad appeal, and Bernie could see the bump. Also very focused on Massachusetts. If Bernie beats Warren, she needs to leave. Her campaign has admitted it's all about hurting Sanders now... such a true progressive that she is.

But you're probably right. I find it sad that you're so gleeful to be quoting Biden's mental collapse. If he does come back to take it legitimately from Samders, Dems are fucked. I will laugh at the idiocy of the decision to push all the chips in for Biden.

And of course... Biden losing will be blamed on the "Bernie Bros", who will be critical on twitter, and just like that demon Susan Sarandon in '16, they'll swing the election to Trump...

Man, I hope Bernie gets a win because he's the only candidate that beats Trump. Seriously, if someone else ran the campaign to beat Trump, I would support them... I started out the primary supporting Richard Ojeda and Gillibrand... I want Trump out because of the climate crisis. Biden won't get anything done, win or lose, so what's the point?

But go ahead and celebrate if Biden wins. It will be short lived.

I will go and vote for Biden today, as my candidate has thrown her support behind his campaign. I'm not excited by Biden, at all. I'm also not excited about Bernie.

I'm so sick of Baby Boomers running this country, and we have no one viable other than a white haired, pale, old white dude to vote for in 2020.

I will have to contemplate if I can support Bernie if he gets the nod.

As for the Democrats having it in for Bernie, why would someone like Mayor Pete or Klobuchar, once realizing they have no path not but their endorsement behind the closest like-minded candidate? Call it a conspiracy, but it seems to only make sense.

                  • odd how different some outlooks are, as just about every poll i have seen shows biden demolishing trump. bernie would have zero chance of getting anything thru mcconnel senate. head to head vs trump i have seen some, such as the recently departed chris mathews speculate bernie would lose 49 states to 1 vs trump while biden would trounce. i for sure hope biden wins as it would be only chance, imo, of getting things done such as improving on aca and tackling environment with someone who actually believes in science.
if bernie wins, of course i am all in, but to me it is about 100 times harder to imagine a win vs trump, and if he does win i cant imagine anything getting passed.

                    • It's hilarious how polls consistently show both Biden and Sanders beating Trump, yet zealots on both sides continue to claim without any evidence other than their own biases that their guy will trounce Trump but the other guy has no chance. It's seriously fucking hilarious...in a pathetic wtf kind of way.

I think both perspectives have a logical backing, actually, although, to be clear, I agree 10000000% that it should NOT be the backing for an argument not to support either candidate against Trump. No matter who the nominee is, if everyone on the left does not back that candidate, no matter what, no matter if Biden took Sanders candy or Sanders to Biden's, or whatever, it will just be evidence of the garbage fire that is the left in this country.

But getting back to why both sides have valid concerns:

I absolutely can see Biden wilting under the increased pressure and scrutiny of the general. It is very clear that Trump had the foresight to know that Biden was likely to be his opponent, and he has already laid strong groundwork for attacks. The corruption angle will be hit hard. That isn't even taking into account that I believe Biden has lost a step, and it will be played up even more by Trump.

On the other side, I still firmly believe that Trump prefers Sanders to Biden. I believe he and most on the right think they can scare people on Sanders. They can say he will destroy our economy, obliterate 401ks, raises taxes on voters, etc. Whether they are right or wrong, I believe the right thinks Sanders will be a very beatable candidate. I think it shows in how they are pulling their punches on him a bit for now. I think the big guns will come out later and they believe it will shift the polls and the votes.

So, yeah, no one knows what will really happen, but from either perspective, I can see why supporters of one guy would look at the other guy and feel he is a sitting duck for Trump.

Time will tell. I happen to have preferences, fears, and insecurities that make me think either candidate could lose to Trump. I hope my worst case for both of them is wrong and that either can and will beat Trump. IDK, though. Your own frustrations must give you pause as well. You see the division int he party and the inability of either to seem to get full support from the base of the other. Both would need that, and neither will get it, likely.

Honestly, I think our shared loathing of Trump will bring both sides together after it's all said and done. We all understand the future of our country depends on getting that POS out of office. Tensions are high on both sides because they know POS is vulnerable and each wants it be their guy to seize the opportunity.

                              • i would prefer if DMT said "why do you think that?" rather than "yet zealots on both sides continue to claim without any evidence". But taking god mode as your default is fun. In every debate, mayor pete pointed out that every freshman dem in house, all 62 i believe, are in opposition of sanders plan to completely do away with the health insurance plans of everyone in lieu of medfor all. sanders did not hit back on that, if so, i cannot even see sanders passing thru the house dem majority, never mind the rep senate.

again, either candidate would be huge upgrade over the fascist trump. i feel like i must constantly say that as someone with short attention span will insist there are zealots who cant see past their own candidate.
