    He won't buy Sanders base.

They may not have made a difference in the last election, but they will in this one.

Mayor Pete knew! I know you hate him, and I am not saying it is without cause, but I do admire that fellow's prep and gift of gab. Wish folks with more of a track record of substance shared his dedication to prep.

I consider his prep and gift of gab much less important than what i expect his policies to be. But plus one for pete, lol

Back to Bloomberg, he has spent close to half a billion dollars so far in his campaign. If he wins this will be a horrifying precedent. It will make a mockery of our democracy

Michael Bloomberg, the former New York mayor who a few days ago slithered into the race for the Democrats’ presidential nomination, wants to ban guns, trans-fats and soft-drinks. Now where do you suppose he stands on marijuana? Exactly. As with Joe Biden, if the War on Drugs was a real war, Michael Bloomberg would be […]

That won't be popular with the young voters.

I keep defending Bernie to some I know who hate him. I am bummed that socialism and the evils it inevitably has led to historically have made some people think he has bad intents. My defense for those who are embarrassed by Trump but loathe to elect a socialist is that with our system and all the rest in it, it will be a miracle if he can pass the one bit of government controlled industry I support and many others do--universal health care. That, green policies, less intervention in foreign quagmires, I tell them will be his calling cards. What's not to like? He is a good guy trying to do!good things.

But I have brought up before and it has been delicately ignored--he has been an unabashed socialist (not a socialist democrat in the past, but a self-described socialist), and if he were the supreme leader Trump wishes he could be, I would be nervous about the extent to which he would want to increase government control of other non-health care industries. I am really not worried about that, because I think he will focus in the fights I want fought. Still, sometimes I wonder if the more avid Bernie supporters fail to see the flaws of socialism and even communism. I know students and many of my peers see both as preferable to late capitalism and neoliberalism. I get it. It all looks wonderful to me on paper. History shows us the reality is far different.

I get angry when anti-socialists make Bernie out to be a bad guy. He is a good guy who wants good things for millions left behind in our country. And I think he will be pulling in the right directions on many issues and he is someone we can trust to fight the good fight. But his underlying ideology has a long history of failure and that is baggage for him. That gets dismissd here a lot. Folks are pro Bernie but have stopped short of saying they are pro socialism. Guess it is time I want to know if others see that here or if anyone wants to come out as an unabashed socialist. That would be an interesting conversation.

A New Deal is my general impression of Sanders brand of socialism, but there is also the reality that his underlying ideology has made him sympathetic to those authoritarian strongmen who represent the dark path state control can take, and the point I have made before that socialism is still a negative word to many voters. In fact, one anti-Sanders friend of mine is from Cuba and points to that as a reason to fear Sanders' ideology. Here is an article that touches on how previous sympathies for Latin American strongmen and praise for Castro: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/...socialism.html.

I think this stuff hurt Bernie in 2016. Not sure if it still would take Florida out of play with the newly eligible voters down there, though.

I guess my general point is that I defend Bernie and have begun to cheerlead for him to those who are wary of him, but I cannot go so far as to defend socialism as an ideology, especially to those from Latin America and Eastern Europe and that is problematic since it is a label he has embraced (I try to explain how his brand of socialism is different, but that word, that label, it is a barrier). I know he has rebranded as a democratic socialism, and shifted away from praising Venezuela and Cuba to countries like Norwway and Sweden, but that initial branding brings negative feelings I can't deny, especially to people I know who come from regimes that called themselves socialist.

I know Bernie is not a supporter of that kind of oppression. He does not want that, and does not want our country to be that. But I do worry the socialist label will be pushed hard in the general and hurt him. And I am curious if others here understand where that fear and anxiety of that term and ideology comes from. To dismiss it as misguided dismisses the anxieties of those that have heard that term and suffered under those who used it as the label for their oppressive ideology.

Lazy isn't the word I would use. I would say she wasn't adequately prepped, which is a horrible mistake. I'm actually surprised how little coverage this has gotten in the MSM.

As for Pete's "gift of gab". His speech pattern is exactly like Obama's, but it lacks the substance with in the speech pattern. I hear a lot of words from Mayor Pete, but they all seem very, very hollow and shallow.
