On Saturday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered remarks at the Claremont Institute. His talk didn’t make any breaking news. Yet Pompeo offered by far the best explanation of how President Trump sees the world and America’s place in it. Trump’s critics are blindly obsessed with hating Trump. They have never allowed themselves to seriously consider the alternative — that his statecraft is sound...

“We had lost sight of respect,” Pompeo said, “not for other nations, but for our own people and for our ideals. We cozied up to Cuba. We struck a terrible agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran that put the regime’s campaigns of terrorism and proxy wars on steroids. And many of our leaders were more eager to delight the Davos crowd than champion the principles that have made us the greatest nation that civilization has ever known.” Trump’s style of statesmanship is anything but normal. But in practice, his policies look a lot more like a return to normal diplomacy — one that puts faith and responsibility in America to look after America’s place in the world.

Do you know anyone so blinded by hatred of Trump that they cannot look at the facts? I know at least one.

J, the only point that I can see from Pompeo is his trying to explain his boss' mentality about politics. It doesn't play well on the world stage, and he makes us look worse and worse.

If you really can't see what the tariffs are doing to prices, you're not paying attention.

As I have said elsewhere, "Thank you Donald Trump for the tax break. It will help me pay the increase on good from the tariffs."

And this is based on what exactly? The view from your porch? Because it's certainly not based on reality. Recent Pew Research polls of how European countries view Trump is, well, pretty much at an all-time low of any president ever. The UK? 28% approve. Germany? Only 10% approve. France? 9%. Spain? 7%.

See the attached graph for some proof, unlike what you offer.

He threatened to tariff their cars and decimate their economies. He dropped out of the Paris Accord. He disrespected the Mayor of London. Merkel shows public animosity towards him. He disrespected the PM of Canada. And they "respect" him? Laughable. I mean, what the heck are you looking for as proof? Asked and answered. The importer pays the tariffs. It has a negative impact on consumers, because selection goes down and prices go up. That said, it is a fraud to say the consumer pays for tariffs. That is only true when there is no other supplier available.

Often, a tariff will price a product out of the market or a significant reduction in market share. In that sense, the producing country's producers pay through lost wholesale sales. Of course, tariffs work both ways. We are getting close to an actual trade war, finally, where both countries see who can stand the lost sales the longest. So far we have had only minor escalation. If there is an actual war, it will be much worse. In the specific case of USA vs China. It will be much worse for China than for USA. Some of our retailers will welcome a chance to shift away from Chinese suppliers, due to the long list of complaints against various Chinese producers.

This is basic stuff. Why are you asking? For example, the so called farm bailout is a temporary adjustment. There are other purchasers, just not at the same price. It will hurt but not injure.
