And just a few hours after Roseanne Barr made an abhorrent, racially-charged tweet about Obama and Valerie Jarrett, ABC has cancelled the show.

Good, horrible person who just could learn to shut her mouth on social media...now she can scream her hate filled rants to the dark corners of the internet where nobody can hear her.

What I mean is, the Trump supporting Alt-Right wing of the Republican party are racist scumbags and it worries me that Roseanne has recently identified with much of the political messaging from the Alt-Right, spreading some of the sickest and most vile conspiracy theories, and all of this worries me greatly in regards to the content of the new show. I think that's fair to bring up.

I believe that an alt-right thinker like Roseanne would refuse to have an episode about a black issue because she'd see it as left-wing pandering, in which case that makes the kid a set-piece prop that signifies "we're not racist, so why even talk about race?"... but again, I sincerely hope that I'm proven wrong.
The new show is being marketed as tackling serious issues, so I could yet be proven wrong. I was telling my wife, the grandkid's mom is apparently deployed in the military somewhere, so hopefully they bring her in at some point as an actual black cast member. That would be a step up. The first episode was the highest rated sitcom in the last 5 years, so it's already been picked up for a 2nd season. Lots of time to see how it all pans out. I'll continue watching.

The exchange between her and Chelsea Clinton from today is possibly even worse than the Valerie Jarrett one. Here's what she tweeted at Chelsea Clinton after she had called her "Chelsea Soros Clinton".

"Sorry to have tweeted incorrect info about you!I Please forgive me! By the way, George Soros is a nazi who turned in his fellow Jews 2 be murdered in German concentration camps & stole their wealth-were you aware of that? But, we all make mistakes, right Chelsea?"

She should go on tour with Dennis Miller and Michael Richards. The Career-Suicide Bombers. It's brilliant, right? It would kill in the South.

No idea what happened to her. She fell into the alt-right crazy echo chamber, as evidence from her belief in the craziest conspiracy theories (btw, the soros nazi thing is so absurd given his age, it didn't need debunking, but it has been, completely--the fact she mentioned that shows you where she gets her "facts").

Maybe she spends too much time on Facebook talking to bots. She said on some talk show recently--kimmel, I think, that she didn't change, everyone else did. I think it is pretty clear she has. That, or she hid this side of her pretty well.

I don't know if they intended it as a laugh, but I got a chuckle out of the drug makers response to her blaming ambian on her tweets, saying racism is not a side effect of their drugs.

Ambien does have whole host of other side effects that could impact one's mental and emotional state, particularly if that person is already an ADHD bipolar with multiple personalities and a history of psychiatric drug use. It's not completely out of the realm of possibility that their product could contribute to her irrational behavior, although with everything else she has going on, that isn't the first place I'd look to explain her embrace of nutty conspiracy theories and racist garbage.
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."

I can certainly buy the possibility that Ambien may have played a role in impairing her judgement in tweeting that racist tweet, just like I'm sure being drunk contributed to Mel Gibson's rant awhile back. But I too am skeptical of the idea that the drugs contribute to the underlying sentiment. The ideas were there, and she has danced up to this line before. The drugs may have helped push her into revealing some darkness in her she would not otherwise have.

Speaking of her nutty conspiracy theories, I really would love to do a forensic analysis of how she got down these rabbit holes. My wife is adamant that no one believes such nonsense unless they actively want to. Maybe. Idk. But I'd love it if she shared all of her sources, how she came across them, if she tried to verify the outlandish claims she makes and seems to believe, why she chose to accept these claims, etc. To me, if we can't all agree on a shared reality, there is no hope on having meaningful dialogue that leads to consensus, or even tolerance. The fact that someone as seemingly bright and objectively high functioning in social interactions with many outside the conspiracy bubbles would buy into these things fascinates and disturbs me.

She is going to be on Joe Rogan's podcast on Friday. I hope he asks her such questions. Although, I fear he might not. I respect Rogan a lot as a free thinker willing and able to engage all sorts of people on all sorts of issues, but he has a blind/soft spot for people who peddle in dangerous, unfounded conspiracy theories. He does call out many wrong ideas, which I think is very valuable given who he reaches with his show, but doesn't express the level of outrage over some of them I'd hope for. His defense of and friendship with Alex Jones, even in the face of things like his Sandy Hook vitrol is really the only thing I hate about Rogan. Despite this glaring flaw, he is a great interviewer, and I can't think of a better guy for someone with Roseanne's ideas to talk to, in that he will be sympathetic to her positions, but also push her in ways a straight up Republican interviewer might not. It should be interesting.

I think it's as simple as Facebook - and these days, Twitter even moreso.

Barr is brilliant in the sense of her comedic creativity and innovation, etc.

but a certain amount of people gravitate to social media sites that they can't navigate successfully - with disastrous results. public figures should be especially cautious, but for many, the feeling of tribalism sucks them in and takes them down.

usually it's innocuous. I have mentioned that people who say that "Twitter sucks, it's so negative" have absolutely no understanding of how it works. Everyone is the producer and director of their own Twitter feed. if your feed sucks - well, that's on you.

anyone can create a pleasing Twitter feed - if all you want is cooking tips or pleasant movie chatter or straightlaced hard news updates - or all of the above - then create that. if you find that a follow tweets or retweets upsetting material - they are one click away from oblivion on your feed. rinse and repeat.

Black people look like monkeys is less creative than a middle-school dick joke... It's both racist and not even remotely funny... saying it was a joke is an insult to African Americans and to jokes.

JJ, I'm not a social media user, although your comments about twitter in the past almost got my lazy but to start using it. I'm really interested in the idea of how the individual shapes their social media experience vs how they are shaped by it. My wife agrees with you--she says our experience is shaped by us, so if your feed sucks, so do you. By the same thinking, Barr's rabbit hole of crazy is one she dug herself. Is that true of all social media platforms? I'm most interested in Facebook.

My mother has become a different person since Facebook became the primary way she interacts with most of the world. Or maybe I just think that. I guess the seeds of the persona I now see on that platform were always there. She was always racist to an extent (though adores my two biracial sons), she was always anti-gay, to an extent. Her love of the 2nd amendment is new, as is her hard-line antiabortion stance (she had an abortion herself). I guess some shared opinions on some issues morphed into her adopting lots of other opinions on things she never really thought much about before. She used to be a centrist democrat, with some social conservative leanings that wasn't really into politics. Now she is a die hard Trump supporter who uses terms like libtard and thinks HRC is a murderer and child pornographer. It has been an odd thing to watch happen, and I don't know how much of it is her choosing to morph vs being morphed.

Sour Masher, I think it is both.

the law of unintended consequences is the Internet x 1000. and those who bemoan its very existence are missing the very wonderful parts - and how many lives have been greatly improved by it.

and many ruined, too. is it still a net gain? I think so - but maybe the edge is slipping.

it is the ultimate extension of the First Amendment, and tough for me to ever backpedal there. the gamble was that a robust marketplace of ideas wins in the end.

I still think so - but it's not getting easier.

this is the grand cultural experiment - hundreds of years later. even if it ultimately fails, it was worth the ride.

for those who believe in ongoing American progress - whether incrementally or more intensely - there is a path forward to think that the current climate may ultimately yield that. I guess we'll find out.
