Honestly, then why shelter in place at all? If you’re not going to do it right, we should have no quarantine for any portion of time and just let the chips fall where they may with god only knows how many dead. Doing a short shelter in place that doesn’t significantly reduce the pace is essentially meaningless.

Yes, it can be done, and it can be effective. I think the opinions on this vary here partially because of geography. I live in NY, where it is already getting bad. Other folks live in states and areas where it is not bad yet. The consequences of not locking down are not right there in their faces yet, so the real economic impact vs the hypothetical loss of life is different in their minds. I think as this thing spreads to directly impact people and those they love, opinions will change, but it will probably be too late then. The rate of spreading is just incredible. I am hoping much of it is just due to increased testing and this thing does not in fact spread this quickly. If it does, I'm not sure if any of our current measures will be enough to slow this thing enough to really have a major impact on saving lives. I hope I'm wrong.
