  • NYG RB situation

'New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin refused to name him the starting running back for Week 2. But Coughlin acknowledged: "He's still very much in our thoughts. He's gotta play."'

I'd still bet on Wilson to be the week 2 starter, but are there any Giant fans/New Yorkers who might be closer to the situation?

The quote is taken a bit out of context.

An ESPN reporter asked Coughlin right after the game 'Is David Wilson the starting RB?' and Coughlin said "I'm not going to answer that now!" The game had just ended, and Coughlin was both furious and embarrassed with the Giants' level of play, namely the turnovers. Wilson was the Giants' 1st rounder last year, but he's a first-time starter and Coughlin hates fumbles (as such, Wilson didn't play after his 2nd fumble).

The fact of the matter is with Andre Brown's injury, the Giants have almost no depth at RB, and certainly no RBs who can come close to Wilson's talent level. They're almost certain to bring in a free agent RB this week (Beanie Wells, Leon Washington), but Wilson will still be the guy. I've heard rumors of a trade with the Saints for Mark Ingram, but I seriously doubt that occurs.

I'd expect Wilson to remain the starter moving forward, and I'd even say this is a great buy-low opportunity.

So does Giants management, or else they would have signed someone better than Brandon Jacobs. That is to say, just about anyone else who was available.

Coughlin has never bought into Wilson's blocking and ball-keeping ability from Day One last year, playing him only to the extent that he had to given his talent level - and when those things weren't terrible.

Does that mean Wilson won't play? Not necessarily, because of the lackluster alternatives. But if anyone - ANYONE - surprised and "did the little things," Coughlin would be sorely tempted to go in that direction.

Wilson is lucky in that "all things being equal," he'd ride the bench for Coughlin - but all things are not equal, so he should get more chances.

Brandon Jacobs is essentially useless other than in a TD only league. He'll get the goal line shots for the Giants, but not much else, IMO.

Empirically (with no hard data to back it up but many years of watching him) Jacobs was never a good short yardage or goal line back so I don't see him being an asset there either.
