  • And so begins the HDID threads

    Greetings everyone,

I had my first draft last night and went in mostly blind and largely unprepared. Wanted to see the general consensus on my squad. This is a 12-team league, start 1 QB, 2 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 1 Flex, 1 K, 1 DEF. Scoring is 1 point per reception, 6 points for a passing TD, -2 for INT, 25 yards per passing point, 10 points per yard for receiving and running. The only other wrinkle in scoring is some of my idiot friends wanted to "spice things up" and made safeties worth 10 points. Completely arbitrary, but whatever.

Anyway, I was drafting out of the 11 spot and was kind of shocked at how weak the talent pool seemed to get. Here is my squad, with the corresponding round selected next to the player:

QB: Russell Wilson (4), Carson Palmer (10)

RB: Jay Ajayi (1), Ezekiel Elliott (3), Ameer Abdullah (5), Rob Kelley (8), Jamaal Charles (13, because why not?)

WR: Amari Cooper (2), Martavis Bryant (6), Sammy Watkins (7), Corey Coleman (9)

    TE: Eric Ebron (11)

    K: Stephen Gostkowski (12)

    DEF: Pittsburgh (14)

    Hmmmm.....I dunno man.

Ajayi/Cooper seems like a relatively weak duo out of the #11 spot, and while I like Zeke, not sure I would've taken a QB on the heels there. I think anyone who takes Zeke has to be aggressive with RBs/WRs to protect what still may be a long absence, and going with a QB there didn't help. Taking a kicker in Rd 12 is bad form, noob!

I don't really disagree, I just didn't love the options at that point. I thought Melvin Gordon might slip to me, but he went the pick before and I certainly didn't want to go for a QB in the first round in a 1 QB league. I figured Ajayi was probably the best RB available. As far as WRs are concerned, it was between Amari, Michael Thomas, and Jordy Nelson for me. I went for a hunch.

Here were the respective 1-2 combos for the teams:

      David Johnson/Jameis Winston
      LeVeon Bell/Andrew Luck
      Antonio Brown/Doug Baldwin
      Julio Jones/Todd Gurley
      Aaron Rodgers/Michael Thomas
      Odell Beckham Jr./Jordan Howard
      LeSean McCoy/DeMarco Murray
      Mike Evans/Jordy Nelson
      AJ Green/Devonta Freeman
      Melvin Gordon/Drew Brees
      Tom Brady/Brandin Cooks

While Ajayi/Amari is not particularly world-beating, I think it might be better than at least a handful of combos. My hope is to at least tread water until Zeke gets back and then hopefully make a push in the second half of the season.

And yeah, yeah, kicker in round 12. I know. I was just so disgusted with my options at WR/RB at that point that I went a round early on the kicker.

I like Amari but pretty tough to take him in front of Jordy and especially Thomas. It's a solid team with upside in the WR's but it would have been nice to complement that group with someone like Fitzgerald or even Garcon -- more of a reliable PPR type.

In a 1 QB & 1 TE league, I wait on both. 5 QBs taken in the first 2 rounds is a boon for you.

Load up on RB & WR. I like your RB but those WR are a bit weak. Turn that #4 pick into a good PPR receiver & that 7 pick into QB would make me feel a lot better.
And I'm OK with Elliott in the 3rd. Once he gets back, trade your other best RB for WR.
