Somehow, 1923 was the only season Ruth ever won the MVP

I got Bonds right. Would never have guessed the one above him, although it makes sense. Fantastic season.

Also, there's someone tied with Bonds so your question is off.

In the AL, previous winners were ineligible to get MVP votes again until 1930.

                      • I had to look through the list of MVP's, but I assume it must be Hal Newhouser 1945. I had no idea that Newhouser won the MVP in both 1944 and 1945 and finished second in 1946. What a three-year run.

yep, I was shocked when i saw his WAR ahead of lots of other more famous names. Also i don't have a great understanding of WAR and why his year is higher than Bob Gibson 1968.

the list of MVP's from 1939 to 1948 is mind boggling even for a VDer.....Bucky Walters, Frank McCormick, Dolph Camilli, Mort Cooper, Joe Gordon, Spud Chandler, Marty Marion, Phil Caveretta, Bob Ellioot., Lou Boudreau.

Newhouser gets some WAR from his hitting, too.

And 1968 the whole league couldn't hit, so that's part of it.

Whereas in the latter war years the talent was thin, so I'm sure replacement level was lower. That might be a case where WAR does a good job of measuring value within the season but not so good for comparing between seasons.

Boudreau actually had a career. Maybe some of the other guys (Camilli, Gordon, Elliot, etc) if you squint hard enough. But that's not exactly a list of luminaries.
