NYC had two major blackouts in my lifetime -- the 1977 one, which I missed since I was away for the summer, and another in 2003 that lasted about 12 hours. And both times the entire city freaked out (of course, the 1977 one is infamous and even had a movie made about it, "Summer of Sam")
