  • RJEL wife asked me if anyone is throwing a knuckleball these days. I couldn't think of anyone.

    • Video in this tweet showing a slow-mo of Luke Jackson's spike grip on his slider. The spike grip on a slider functions very similarly to a spike grip on a curveball.

      • It's a super small sample size, but if anyone has a minors draft coming up, Andrew Painter of the phils would be a nice late flyer.

In the majors? I don't think so? Mickey Jannis did last year.

I will also pretend that I totally get what you're saying about the knuckle curve so as to not look like the dummy I really am. Is the term "knuckle curve" a misnomer? Or is it just referring to the anatomical knuckle rather than, as I assumed, a knuckleball-esque pitch that curves?
Knuckle curve has nothing to do with the knuckleball. I think it got its name from pitchers from pitchers who put the knuckle of the index finger on the ball instead of the fingertip of the index finger.

Image demonstrating how the knuckle on the ball would look:

But the concept is the same and "spike curve" and "knuckle curve" get used interchangeably. Virtually all the pitchers I know who use the grip now use the spike grip rather than the knuckle grip. I think it's just easier to feel and easier to accomplish the same purpose that way. Interestingly, Adam Wainwright takes his index finger totally off the ball on his curveball. Same principle--the middle finger does all the work, the index finger is just along for the ride, or at most the index finger is doing a little pushing, but it's not creating spin.

              • Craig Kimbrel spike curveball grip is another example:

"Jesus said to them, 'Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.'"

                • This is the more traditional curveball grip, for comparison:

"Jesus said to them, 'Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.'"

                    • Apparently it's been a looooooong time since I was taught anything about a curve grip. I've never even seen the first two. Fried's looks very familiar. We were taught the curve in little league and it was like that.
