    • Spent most of yesterday at the Ulster American Folk Park ... haven't been there since school days ... apparently:

The terms Upper Case and Lower Case comes from 18th Century printers. They kept the letters in two cases: capital letters in the "upper" case and the normal letters in the "lower" case.

Coin a phrase should actually be pronounced Quoin a Phrase ... the quoin is the wedge that holds the print disks in place. Quoining was tightening the plate ready for printing.

Rule of Thumb is when a printer rubbed his finger along a groove in the letters to make sure they were all pointed in the right direction.

To Create a Good Impression ... a good print creates deeper letter impressions on the back of the paper ... hence a the phrase ... I'm guessing the work impress comes from the same roots.

Rub the Slate Clean ... at school, younger children wrote on slate. When they went to the Master with their work, if they got it correct, he would wipe the slate clean, and they would move on to the next lesson. If they got it wrong they probably got a beating.

Blot your Copybook ... older children wrote in Copybooks using quills. If they made a mistake with their ink, and blotted their copybooks, they probably got a beating.

        • Diablo's last 5 picks (arguably last 7 picks) might have made him joint favourite. Feral's last few picks have been scarcity picks, but I still think he's on the best strat because it's uncontested. Controller like Diablo has been smashing the hell out of value picks, so he will probably be in contention when this unwinds. Still think my points ceiling will be too low to compete ... IMO you shouldn't win with my strat after burn F, R and J in the first 10 picks (and an early WC as a result of those picks). Frae's strat is interesting also, and well executed ... not sure if he's power punting.

This might be one the closest drafts ever. Everyone has a good team. Anyone could finish top 3. Maybe 1 or 2 teams can run away with it in the end, but somewhere in the standings there will be a massive bunching of teams IMO.

It might be that the person who exploited the 9 person VD3 draft order best wins. My strat meant I couldn't really take advantage of this.

            It matches.
"Igor, would you give me a hand with the bags?"
"Certainly. You take the blonde and I'll take the one in the turban!"

            • I swear I was very close to using one of my turn picks (and a wild card) to take Marichal. I've been watching him for about 4-5 rounds. Can't believe he fell to the 14th. Problem is I had to start filling my need positions (C) and rarer letters (E).

                  • btw, a small clarification you might want to make in the "Intro to VD" post, because I was kind of confused when I projected a pick into my spreadsheet and the scores didn't move nearly as much as I expected - multiplicative scoring is multiplied within each group of five categories and then the four sets of five categories are added, which makes dumping a category a lot more tenable than it sounds with the current description.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

I would need to check to be sure, but if the groupings are logs or exponents I think adding them would be the same as multiplying all 20 and then taking the log i also have hackos pick but will give him the chance to post since I won't be ready to pick for an hour or two

All 20 cats are multiplied together.

The rankings are generated as normal.

Then +1 is added to ever position / score for every category.

So the team that finishes top in HR gets 12+1. The bottom team gets 1+1.

We are experimenting with this to make punting strats more viable, but not a requirement like Additive scoring.

                            • maybe I misread my spreadsheet then? It seemed like going from 2 points in a single category to 3 didn't make the total score go up 50%, but I don't have a working spreadsheet I can test with right now.

I don't have the spreadsheet either but I think going from 2 to 3 points should increase a score by a multiple of the log of 1.5, not by 1.5 times
