  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects ("End of Season" Edition)

Here's the latest version of my list. Lots of changes, many because of the BA League Top 20 lists that just came out.

Same spiel as usual: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), and actual closers are upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

Glad to see you added Brett Phillips where you did. He's gonna be a dude, and not many people knew his name coming into this year. Tony Kemp is another guy that I'm glad to see on your list.

I understand why Appel is ranked where he is, but he has the stuff back that led him to be drafted #1. Doug Brocail did good work with him in Corpus Christi getting him back on track.

            Thanx for the response, Mike.

You're right about Phillips. I keep 1000+ prospects on my list and I didnt start paying attention to him until earlier this year. I noticed that his stats indicate that he has a very good power-speed combo, so I put him in the "mid-range" section of my list. I'm not a scout and I dont have access to them either so what I'm looking for are players where that scouting reports and the stats match up. When BA ranked him #8 on their MWL list (indicating that he is likely to be on their top 100), this was the scouting seal of approval, so I moved him onto my list. Looks like a pretty good showing from a 6th rounder.

Kemp is a speed guy that I also did not have on my list until recently. Very good plate discipline and good ARL but his SBs are what attracted me. I think I initially put him in the high "fringe" section of my list since I cant tell how good a prospect a speed guy really is w/o a reputable scouting report. He was #15 on BA's Texas League list, which probably indicates he isnt good enough for their top 100, but seems good enough for him to be potentially an MLB regular, so I added him as well.

Appel did pitch much better in AA but there still seems to be considerable skepticism about how good he projects to be now for MLB. I, as well as everyone else, am anxious to see how he does in the AFL.

Rt now, I have 5 Astros making BA's Top 100, w a few others also receiving consderation.

Great to see the jump Pompey made on the list. What are your thoughts on what he is capable of at the MLB level. Also, where do you see him starting off in 2015?

                Thanks

yeah, lots of changes! great stuff ... another name that jumped out at me in the Jays system is Franklin Barreto, all the way up to 34! I had been thinking that Jays really need to target a solid SS propect this off season - any insight into whether his future is as a SS or if he might get moved to 2B (or somewhere else)? granted he's only 18 so it's really early days ...
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

I might have Pompey a little high, but he projects to be an everyday CFer who steals bases, so that's why he's as high as he is. His BA scouting reports indicate he is a potential gold-glover w plus speed and gap power. Despite the late season callup to MLB in 2014. I would expect he could use more minor league seasoning and will start out in the minors next year, probably at AAA. But it's possible that w a good spring he'll begin the year in Toronto.

Barreto's scouting reports indicate that while he has some work to do at SS, he should be given every opportunity to stick there and that he's athletic so there is a good chance that he will. Looks like he has the makings of an elite prospect who'll get a lot of SBs and hit some HRs, which is why he is as high as he is.

                        Again, great stuff as always...

Curious to see why you ranked Giles so low considering his success in the majors, and his status as the #2 guy in the Philly bullpen.

Also, why the huge drop for Brandon Nimmo? His season looked to be a success given his status as the ultimate cold weather player (Wyoming), his age, his batting eye, and his power/speed potential.

                          Thanx for the response, Hornsby.

The fact that Giles as a non-closer reliever is on the list at all speaks to my high valuation of him. But Papelbon will continue to be the closer in Philly in 2015 unless they trade him, which I dont see happening until at least mid-season, if then. Then, Giles would appear to be the closer in waiting, but a lot of things could happen before then. So, in roto his value for 2015 would be as a very good setup guy who might get 2-3 saves. You could make an argument that I should have him higher, but the uncertainty as to if and when Giles becomes the closer is why he's not higher.

I, too, was surprised that Nimmo wasnt more highly regarded by BA. They ranked him as only the #17 prospect in the FSL and didnt rank him at all on the Eastern League Top 20, which in all likelihood means he wont be on their Top 100. Their recent scouting report says it's uncertain whether he'll stick as a CFer and if he moves to a corner that will put more pressure on his power, which is still developing. I still like his upside, which is why he's still in my Top 100, but the uncertainty that scouts have about him keeps him out of my top 70-80, which is usually the cutoff for guys I target in my leagues.
