  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects ("Playoff Chase" Edition)

[Edit] Link to the latest version of the list (10/6/2014): http://forum.rotojunkiefix.com/showt...uot-Edition%29

Here's the latest version of my list.

Same spiel as usual: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), and actual closers are upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

Thanks RHD! The only eligible name on the list not currently rostered in my league is Mallex Smith. After looking over his stats, I am surprised he doesn't get more attention. I know he is old for his level at 21 in A ball but the dude has 86 steals and an OPS over .800. Yet I can't find anyone touting him. Is it his age? His height? Why isn't a guy with his stat line and obvious elite speed getting more attention? Anyway, I just dropped Braxton Davidson for Mallex. I really liked Braxton coming into the draft, but he has shown nothing and is so far away.

Also, a little surprised not to see Clint Coulter on the back end of the list. His K rate is scary, but he has a good pedigree, and is showing plus power. Any thoughts on him?

Thanx for the response, Sour Masher.

Smith was on the list before because of his SBs and solid other stats but he got no love from BA at all so I took him off. Wasnt even in their Team Top 30 at all. But he has had a solid year and those 86 SBs are hard to ignore. Has chance at 100 SBs if he revs it up. And he was just rated the fastest baserunner in the MWL by BA, so he may be getting more attention from the scouts now. He strikes out a lot but also walks a lot so his overall plate discipline seems OK. He's not old for his league, which is Hi-A now. I know that these speed guys who noone's projected yet to be a MLB regular seldom turn into anything useful, but I think he at least deserved to be on the list.

Coulter is a catcher, so you know how I feel about them as roto prospects. He is having a very good offensive year. BA says he has big offensive potential but there are big questions about whether he can stay at C, so the question may be where can he move to. The fact that he is right-right and slow doesnt speak much for his athleticism, so if he can only play 1B then he's really going to have to hit and he's hasnt played above Low-A yet. His K-rate is not at my scary level and he also walks a lot so that doesnt overly concern me. On my radar but not really that close to the list rt now for me.

I have a hard time putting a guy 4th who K's 41% at AA this year.

RHD isn't alone in his admiration of Gallo's 80 power, but I share your concerns. He may have top prospect upside, but he is a huge risk to completely bust. He makes Javier Baez look like Tony Gwynn in terms of contact rate at times. Still, in a post PED world, 50 homer power upside is exceedingly rare and very enticing. People have visions of Stanton when they see Gallo hit them out of the park. Of course, Stanton's ability to make contact was and is better than Gallo's.

I think BA is wrong also. BP and Law were more prudent, putting Gallo at 13 and 18. I wonder if BA did another ranking if they'd push him down a bit since he hadnt been in AA very long when they did their midseason top 50. They might have thought his K rate would drop.

Gallo still has work to do and I dont think someone ranked 4th should have a flaw so bad that if not corrected he almost surely cannot be a major league player. The worst K% among qualified players this year is 34% and Chris Davis was at 22% in AA.

Thanx, onejayhawk, for the response and the sorted lists above.

Lamb is a guy that I was a little late in noticing. Had a monster year in the minors, albeit a little old for his levels. He is a starter in MLB now and would seem to project as a solid average to above-average regular, which is why he's where he is on the list. Not doing much yet in MLB but hasnt had many ABs yet.

His overall K-rate is 33.7%, but yes, a K-rate that high is cause for concern. But he also is drawing a lot more walks this year than last, which shows that he is a good judge of the strike zone. His approach seems to be working, as he's hitting a ton of HRs and still batting.278. The consensus now is that he an elite prospect. I might have him a little higher than most but he's also #4 on BA's mid-season list, #6 on John Sickels', and #8 on MLB's. Yes, he has some work to do at AA but his improved plate discipline and swing this year make me think he'll continue to figure things out. He still has a lot of risk but I love the upside.

Glad to hear it about Lamb. He can be my Sano insurance at 3B and CI. Now I just need a SS who is on Y! and not owned. How do you feel about Mondesi long term? His season was nothing great, but he is very young. I have two option years before he gets pricey. Does he project MLB by 2017?

Mondesi is having an off year but he's really being challenged as a 19-y/o in Hi-A, and in a pitcher's park to boot. Scouts still like him despite the struggles. If he develops as expected he'll be in MLB at least by 2017 even if he takes it one level per year. Sometime during 2016 is what I would expect.
