Went to this tonite in Wilmington, DE (very nice park!). A pitchers' duel, and Cal League won 3-2. Some notes (completely from memory):
- A lot of notable prospects in this game (too bad Gallo got promoted previously), but some of them didnt start and only had 1 AB or so, like Carlos Correa (why??) and Jesse Winker (who had won the "reverse" HR derby the day before).
- Dont know who got game MVP but it should go to Kyle Waldrop (Cincy), who drove in all 3 runs for the Cal, including a 2-run HR. He's a pretty nice sleeper prospect who's a bit old for the league at 23 but is having a very nice season w a 300/400/500 slash line.
- Kyle Wren (Atl) also had a nice game, as he had one of the RBIs for the Carolina and stole 2 SBs. He's very speedy and has 30 SBs so far this season. Carolina's other RBI came on a sac fly, I forget who by.
- Most if not all pitchers pitched no more than an inning apiece, so pretty hard for any one pitcher to stand out, but Steven Okert (SF), who I'm not familiar with, got a nice save, coming on w runners on 1B and 2B w none out in the 9th w only a 1-run lead and getting three consecutive outs, at 2 least on Ks.
- I didnt see a velocity display, so I dont know how fast anyone was throwing.
- 2 ChiSox hitting prospects in the game: Courtney Hawkins and Tim Anderson. Hawkins played the entire game and went 0-4 w at least 3 Ks. Anderson came in mid-game and struck out both times. Between the 2 of them, I think a foul tip from Hawkins was the only time either of them even touched the ball. Both very hi-upside guys, but definitively a lot of swing and miss w these two. The Sox seem to have about as many hi-upside, hi-risk hitting prospects as TExas, as they also have James Baldwin, Trayce Thompson, Jared Mitchell, Keenyn Walker and Keon Barnum. Hopefully one of these will turn into a Joey Gallo.
- Other notable prospects included GAbe Guerrero, Josh Hader, Teoscar Hernandez, Joe Ross, Ben Lively, Hunter Renfroe, Corey Seager, Trevor Story, Jorge Alfaro (3B and run scored), Christian Binford, and Chi-Chi Gonzalez. Some of the additional players listed in the program apparently werent there.
