  • Tony Gwynn - RIP

    Per Padres Twitter - https://twitter.com/Padres/status/478557072187875328

Sad to see. I knew his health was in decline but still shocking that he died so soon. As a padres fan, he was my idol growing up and generally considered one of the all-around good guys in baseball.

As a guy who grew up in the 80s this one really stings - RIP Tony.

One of the best in the game in every way...this is just..difficult.
Considering his only baseball post in the past year was bringing up a 3 year old thread to taunt Hornsby and he's never contributed a dime to our hatpass, perhaps?

Holy shit. I thought I saw he had health problems when he resigned from SDSU, but never thought it would come to this so soon. Damn. RIP.

RIP Mr. Padre. This is going to be a hard day. I had many interactions over the years and he was always nothing less than a gentleman. I'll always cherish sitting in the dugout at Grossmont college during a winter league game and talking with him about some youngster named Eric Davis in Cincinnati as I was putting on my gear. After I came back in from that inning he praised me for the way I blocked pitches and we continued talkin baseball between innings through the whole game.

He was a good man and will always be Mr. Padre

54 years old. damn, that ain't right.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Wow, what a shock. He was one of the greats, and by all accounts a wonderful human being as well.

In a season of losses for the Padres this one is the most difficult to handle.

A class act on and off the field.

Thank you Tony for everything you brought to the game we love and for being the player who helped me fall in love with Baseball.

                    You are already missed.

Way too young. It was a joy to watch him hit. He had so much respect for baseball and it's history and was a player you wanted the kids to emulate and learn from on how to play the game the right way. With class. RIP Tony Gwynn.

"Sometimes hitters can pick up differences in spin. They can identify pitches if there are different releases points or if a curveball starts with an upward hump as it leaves the pitcher’s hand. But if a pitcher can change speeds, every hitter is helpless, limited by human vision."
