  • Hidden early-season performances

It's easy to put too much weight on April numbers since everyone's starting from zero. Here are some guys I saw while poking through FG looking for players who had turned things around one way or the other so far in May:

Brandon Phillips: .255/.272/.318 April, .382/.421/.647 May
Asdrubal Cabrera: .220/.297/.330 April, .340/.415/.553 May
Colby Rasmus: .194/.242/.387 April, .286/.318/.714 May
Dustin Pedroia: .270/.325/.351 April, .320/.454/.540 May

Adrian Gonzalez: .317/.377/.644 April, .164/.258/.236 May
Marcell Ozuna: .310/.364/.480 April, .149/.143/.277 May
    Chris Shelton-Colabello: .295/.343/.484 (27 RBI) April, .149/.200/.234 (3 RBI) May
Trevor Plouffe: .304/.409/.478 April, .164/.207/.309 May
Yadier Molina: .350/.377/.540 April, .209/.244/.233 May
Anthony Rendon: .316/.352/.544 April, .204/.216/.327 May
Austin Jackson: .307/.391/.520 April, .229/.255/.271 May
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

The only one that I have is Rasmus and has sat out the last 3 days and may need to go on the DL.

I love this kind of info... going to post something for pitchers in a bit.

for sure on that list will be Ubaldo Jiminez ... glad I couldn't unload him last month.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

rather than an April to May comp, I did ERA-xFIP. Ubaldo ended up negative on the year even though he's been better of late.

                not surprising. in his 2 May starts he's 2-0, 14.1 IP, 0 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 17 Ks.

keep in mind though that the last pitcher I talked up was Josh Fields just before he imploded multiples time to get sent down.

A handful more interesting numbers. Over the last 30 days, top players at each position by wRC+, surprises highlighted:

                  C: Gattis 183, Lucroy 159, Posey 155, Martin 150, Perez 148, Zunino 122 somehow even with a 3.3 BB% and 36.3 K%
                  1B: CSantana 218 (.348/.463/.667), Rizzo 208, Duda 185, Encarnacion 178, Goldschmidt 173 - and at the bottom, CDavis 74, AGonzalez 63, Hosmer 51
2B: Gennett 208 (.400/.430/.688), Altuve 142 with 13 steals and four strikeouts, Cano 137, Gordon 137 with 10 steals, Dozier 133, Kinsler 121 - and at the bottom, Utley 68, Infante 55, Hill 50 with zero walks
SS: Hanley 163 with seven steals, Castro 142, Miller 141, Crawford 138, Aybar 137, and finally Tulo 130. No surprises at the bottom: Segura 36, Lowrie 28, ECabrera 15.
3B: no big surprises since you already know about Chisenhall. The worst are Bogaerts 71 (.221/.274/.365), Escober 68, Zimmerman 64, Headley 64. Depressing that I've been stuck with Dominguez in a 12-team mixed and Headley just got cut and I probably still don't want him, even for free.
OF: Trout 242 (.381/.476/.774 - apparently he's good), Crisp 189, McCutchen 188, CDickerson 185, Brantley 184. Kiermaier in 9th, surprising that he's kept it up for a month. At the bottom: a tie for fifth worst between BJ Upton and Justin Upton, both at 58, Schierholtz 48, Lake 42, Choo 34, Viciedo 20.

And a couple of quick pitcher notes:
The worst pitchers by FIP: NMartinez, Nuno, Haren, Estrada, RHernandez, Dickey. Estrada is 3-2 this month with a 6.94 ERA. Haren is 2-1 with a 5.08 ERA and only 4.3 K/9.
And the best: Felix, Arrieta, Kershaw, Zimmermann, HAlvarez. Alvarez has a 2.31 FIP while striking out under 6 per 9 innings; that's possible when you walk less than one and don't give up any homers.

                    May: .229/.276/.385 = .661
                    June: .148/.198/.235 = .432 (yikes!)

Displaying my managerial acumen, I dropped Aybar and traded Bruce for Upton.
