  • What say the pen about this trade offer?

NL only 9 team 5x5 league

I was offered Starlin Castro and Chris Johnson for Rosenthal and Cozart

Castro replaces Cozart, Young would replace either Brandon Barnes, Drew Stubbs or Jose Tabata due to moves I can make with Ramos and Gattis.
I have pitchers such as Casilla or Chris Perez to replace Rosenthal, but there are some other options via FA if necessary with low ERA/WHIP ratios.

My other pitchers are Cueto, Strasburg, Kershaw, HAlvarez, Cole, Street, Rondon, Melancon.

    Thoughts??

If it's Chris Young I probably pass, if it's Chris Johnson I probably do it. I can't help it; I'm a Castro apologist. I see this as a big upgrade at SS since Cozart is basically replacement level. I really like Rosey but I think CJ is reasonably far above replacement level (especially if it's Tabata) and you can certainly spare the saves and the Ks.

Then again, if you have any luck mixing and matching your Barnes/Stubbs/Tabata pupu platter, maybe you're better off trading Rosey for Desmond or Hanley instead of for 2 guys.

It is Johnson...I edited afterward and forgot to replace Young in the second paragraph.

I also have Polanco on my minor list, so when he eventually comes up to replace Tabata/Snider, he'll slot in as well.

You seem set for saves right now but things could turn in a hurry since each of your remaining guys carries significant risk (Street - injury, Rondon - inexperience, Melancon - Grilli). Is it possible to trade one of your other closers instead? Maybe try Street and Cozart for Castro and a lesser hitter?

So, it seems as if you prefer Rosenthal over Street for the remainder of the season...

rosenthal has been very shaky as the closer this year - not too many clean innings. it wouldn't surprise me to see the cardinals turn the closer job back over to motte when he returns, if rosenthal is still looking wobbly.

I still believe in Rosenthal and I think he keeps the job. But I would rather cash in his perceived $25+ value for an elite bat. If I had a pitching staff of Gee, Volquez, Haren, Liriano, etc... some shaky guys, then I'd want the anchor Rosey provides in Ks. But with Kershaw and Cole and Strasburg and Cueto I think you can afford some volatile RPs.

But if you have Polanco then you really only have 1 big hole you need to fill so I might pass on dealing Rosey for 2 medium guys.

Guys are usually a shell of themselves when they first come back from TJ so I don't think Motte is much of an obstacle. For some reason Rosenthal's not getting many swings out of the strike zone which explains the higher than normal walk rate, but he's still striking out a ton of guys and overall has been solid.

I don't think Rosey will struggle much more, but Siegrist could also be an option if he struggles.

I like the deal for you. You didn't post prices or contracts, so I assume that it isn't a factor. But if Rosenthal was keepable $3 while Castro was $28, then I no longer like the deal for you.
