  • How can there be a BS with no R allowed?

Last night, the Braves David Carpenter pitched 0.7 IP while allowing 2 H and zero R or ER, yet he was charged with a BS?

How can a pitcher be given a a blown saves if he is not charged with any runs?

Because he entered with the lead (in a save situation) and allowed runners to score while he was pitching. In the view of the scoring rules, the fact that those runners are charged as runs to another pitcher because that other pitcher put them on base is irrelevant to the fact that the following pitcher blew the lead and thus is charged with the blown save.

      Well said Mike.

Btw do you have a sense of when the super 2 cutoff will be this year?

yeah, it's just a literal thing of "team was ahead when you got there, but not now."
you can enter a 2-1 game with the bases loaded and no outs, and induce a double play and get a strikeout to put out the fire, but if a run scored during the double play, it's a "blown save."

what's stupid is that because of the silly stat, managers often don't make optimal decisions on which pitchers to use and when. clearly the pitcher above should be applauded for getting the team out of a scenario where losing the lead is pretty likely, and leaving it tied (the guy on 3rd and no out is a lock to score, and the guy on 2nd could score just on two fly outs).

even dumber is when people use the "blown SV" stat to claim that a setup man "doesn't have what it takes to close."

the setup man has two options: blow a save, or not blow a save. what can't he do? GET A SAVE, because he'll almost always yield to Kimbrel for the final 3 outs. so if a guy is "0 for 4," that's useless since the zero (or near zero) is baked into his usage. the lesser relievers don't "blow saves" because they pitch when the team is losing anyway - they can't blow a save that isn't even there for anyone on his team....

That all being said, Carpenter was not effective. Not particularly his fault--good pitches hit well, but other than that, he gave up two hits to not just get the game tied, but get behind--and nobody scored after that.

that's why I tried to get away from the specific Carpenter outing...
