Pirates are not giving up Hanson. There would be no reason for him to be a PTBNL.

That's an odd way of looking at things. Just because Davis was blocked in NY (for a number of reasons), that does not mean he can't be an asset to a team needing a first baseman. Andre Ethier is effectively the 4th OF in LA (when everyone is healthy). Nick Franklin is blocked in Seattle (due to the Cano signing). The Braves are about to have a logjam at SP (assuming their current rotation members stay healthy & continue to pitch well). There are a number of reasons that potentially productive players cannot "crack the lineup".

By the way, my comments are more about addressing the notion that Hanson is too much for the Pirates to give for Ike Davis than they are a belief that Hanson is the actual PTBNL.

I was thinking this same thing. Aren't there rules about who can be a PTBNL? I know it isn't just because they haven't decided yet, or are keeping a secret. It's injury or contract or something else. Right?

Hanson is too much for Ike Davis, but I'll go back to agreeing to disagree because we aren't going to sway each other.

Unless they gave the mets a list of 3 guys to pick from and he's on it

Hanson is on the 40 man roster. There wouldn't be any administrative reason not to name him.

It's most likely a player from the Pirates' 2013 draft.

Heyman reporting that the PTBNL is a 2013 draftee. Who besides Meadows could it be then? If it's anyone besides Meadows (they don't need Reese McGuire), the Mets got hosed.

Could be any one of these guys that they've signed...and it's NOT going to be Meadows.

The Pirates had an extra first rounder last year because of the Appel debacle. I've seen some speculation that the PTBNL is their 3rd rounder JaCoby Jones, who is an interesting high risk/high reward prospect.
