I'm with SlideRule - it was a head-scratcher at the time and the deal has just looked worse and worse and, yeah, I think a lot of people saw this coming.
A lot of the same people saw this coming last year as well, and Johnson ended up with 50 saves...again. The contract was a one and done deal, and they had the money, so why not? They didn't want to get tied up with a longer deal

That said, I'm not sure that Johnson can do the resurrection act twice in two years, not with the quality of arms that he now shares the bullpen with. He should, but it's not a given.

$10 mil seems like a waste of money for a low revenue team but other than that its a good acquisition. Both Johnson's ERA and xFIP have been good and stable from 2010-2013, velocity looks stable.

Next in line in DET: Al Al or Joba? Both haven't been stellar to say the least, but Nathan admitting he has dead arm, and not throwing his fastball (nibbling at corners, walking more guys, etc.) is a BAD sign....so, which one would you guys snag if you had a spec spot?

Perhaps Billy plans to flip Johnson for a prospect or cheap player, near the deadline? If so, he'd spend $6.5 million in salary (which was probably in the 2014 budget already), get the saves, and get a player that would help the team in future seasons.

He tried that five years ago with Matt Holliday and managed to turn CarGo into Brett Wallace. The half season in Oakland wasn't terrible if you factor ballpark effects in but it looks bad in the context of his years in Colorado and St. Louis.

Johnson won't have value to anyone if he keeps pitching the way he is now.

Tigers are 5-2 but their bullpen is another story. If Nathan doesn't straighten out then the Tigers go from a bad pen to disaster mode. Alburquerque would be one to speculate on but until he can prove he can cut those walks down he'll never be successful. Joba is another one which twice now has been taken out after allowing lead-off batters to get on so Ausmus not trusting him. Coke needs to be cut from the team but the Tigers for some reason keeps him around. The rest Krol, Reed and Putkonen I doubt were on anybody's list. All the Tigers can do is ride out Nathan and prays this is just a bad short stretch.

Joba got a shot, sucked. Some other gentlemen who apparently play baseball for a living got shots, meh...then Al Al in for the final out & save. Dead Arm Nathan gets win. I wouldn't count on much more from him, seems DL's a'comin....

First off dead arm pitchers do not generally go on the DL. It's common among pitchers and they get through it. If however there is a hidden injury or his skills have dropped because of his age that is another matter entirely but as of now there is no indication that he is injured. Since the Tigers are 5-2, Nathan has a 2 yr contract and the rest of the bullpen sucking he is going to have a long leash. If a Nathan owner is in a panic and willing to sell Nathan low this will be the best time to buy him.

Well, it's chicken or egg, isn't it? Don't think you can entirely separate dead arm from possible injury...but it's likely diminishing skills/effectiveness. Nathan, along with Paps and Soriano, was one of the more glaring "fastball diminishing," locked-in closers heading into this year anyway....so sure, it might just be age and closers aging verrrrry quickly (like NFL RBs), but could also be something structural that's as-yet-undiagnosed. All speculation, of course, and I'm not usually an ambulance chaser but to me this path could very well to a DL stint. Why? For the very reason you wisely mentioned: to PROTECT that 2-yr investment.
