  • Easy Money?

I had my first draft this past weekend and while I know I am light on saves I think this team should easily be at the top of standings. It's a pathetically shallow league, 10 teams mixed Yahoo rosters, but it's fun. The guys are pretty competitive, though not that knowledgeable. Anyway here's my roster.

    Code:
    Round	Pick	Player	Position
    1.	(5)	Paul Goldschmidt	1B
    2.	(16)	Ryan Braun	OF
    3.	(25)	David Wright	3B
    4.	(36)	José Fernández	SP
    5.	(45)	Carlos Gómez	OF
    6.	(56)	Ian Desmond	SS
    7.	(65)	Hunter Pence	OF
    8.	(76)	Jordan Zimmermann	SP
    9.	(85)	Matt Cain	SP
    10.	(96)	Wilin Rosario	C
    11.	(105)	Wil Myers	OF
    12.	(116)	Mat Latos	SP
    13.	(125)	Eric Hosmer	1B
    14.	(136)	Cole Hamels	SP
    15.	(145)	Casey Janssen	RP
    16.	(156)	Neftali Feliz	RP
    17.	(165)	Martín Prado	2B,3B,OF
    18.	(176)	Starlin Castro	SS
    19.	(185)	Anthony Rizzo	1B
    20.	(196)	Francisco Liriano	SP
    21.	(205)	Kyle Seager	3B
    22.	(216)	Nate Jones	RP
    23.	(225)	Khris Davis	OF

Braun 2nd round, Gomez 5th? Jeez. I would not have had the self-control to wait on Gomez that long.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

btw, throwing in my own easy money-ish team: 10-team head-to-head, 6x6 adding OPS and QS. 4 OF, 2 Util, 3 SP, 3 RP, 4 P. I took Segura too early because I forgot we added OPS but otherwise it went well, and apparently I was the only person who realized that adding QS really unbalanced the pitching categories and that there was a big advantage in taking SPs who qualify at RP (btw, if you're on Yahoo and doing that, the guys you want are Wacha, Cingrani, Cashner, Smyly, AWood, and maybe Ross).

Puig and Scherzer were my two keepers.

      Code:
      1.	(3)	Paul Goldschmidt (Ari - 1B)
      2.	(18)	Jean Segura (Mil - SS)
      3.	(23)	Chris Sale (CWS - SP)
      4.	(38)	David Ortiz (Bos - 1B)
      5.	(43)	Yasiel Puig  (LAD - OF)
      6.	(58)	Max Scherzer  (Det - SP)
      7.	(63)	Yadier Molina (StL - C)
      8.	(78)	Josh Donaldson (Oak - 3B)
      9.	(83)	Michael Wacha (StL - SP,RP)

5th round but only 10 teams, 45th overall, granted he should have gone a lot earlier than that. I gambled that people in the draft did not know what they were doing. I was right. The funny thing is, the guy who picked after me thought it was his turn and called out Gomez. I felt bad but I was planning on taking him. He was gracious and said it was his fault. I can't believe Braun lasted to me. Adam Jones was taken right before him. Actually, now that I think about it, I did a draft back in November, 15 team mixed and I picked 15th, I got Braun and Jones.

There were better ranked players out there than Khris Davis at the end but it doesn't really matter, plus I was pissed cause I was all set to take Jose Veras but the guy before me snaked him from me. So I didn't really have a name.

Looks like a real good team. Chris Sale went in the 6th round in ours, I was hoping to get him but went three picks before me.

Your offense clearly looks unstoppable, but your pitching staff as a whole (not just the saves) looks pretty average for a 10-teamer. A little regression from Fernandez and Hamels' injury lingering could cause you a world of hurt. Then again, you do have the extra offense to trade for pitching.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. Pitching went pretty early, which I guess is why I got such a great offense. The odd thing is, I actually focused on getting pitching earlier than I normally do. In the past in this league I would never consider taking a pitcher in the 4th round. But I decided I'd give it a try this year. In rounds 6 and 7 I was set to take a pitcher as well but each time the guy I wanted got taken and I decided to take a hitter. In retrospect I probably should have grabbed the best starter instead of Desmond but I think I was feeling cocky that I could still get a great pitching staff. If Hamels isn't hurt too badly I think he's a steal and will really help. I expect Cain to bounce back from last years bad season. And Latos is pretty damn good. Looking at my team the Jordan Zimmerman pick is kind of odd but I like him.

Don't get me wrong, the pitching is hardly bad, I just expect that there are some really good staffs out there since this is a ten-teamer and they had to be drafting someone when they weren't taking Braun or Gomez for reasons that are not particularly fathomable.

I hear ya. Here are the pitching staffs for the league. I think mine is better than most. One team has Scherzer and Sale but then went and drafted Iwakuma and Griffin. Huge risks there. One teams first pitcher drafted was Bailey. The number next to the team before the pitcher is the number overall that the player was drafted. Fister was drafted way too early.

Wow, apparently most of them were drafting iffy pitchers while you were drafting good hitter. That being said, I think two staffs (Scott's Beard and Brighton) are clearly better than yours, but you look in the group for third which should be more than enough with your hitting.

Yeah, I agree those two are clearly better than mine. Makes sense, they drafted a pitcher in the first round and again in the 4th when I was drafting my first.
