  • Jose Iglesias out until All-Star break

Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias has significant injuries to both shins that are expected to keep him out at least until the All-Star break and could force him to miss most or all of the 2014 season, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com Saturday.

They don't have an obvious replacement in-house so that may be where Drew ends up.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

They also have a history of trading with AZ but that wouldn't suit Boras' needs...

Just my opinion but I don't see DD signing Drew and giving up a 1st round pick and nor should they. That being said I would expect DD just like in the Dirks situation to pick up players off the waiver wire. He will look to trade also but I don't expect a big splash there. In the meantime the players in-house to cover the SS are likely to be Worth and Perez with Lombardozzi mixed in. Saurez is the Tigers top prospect at SS but I expect him to stay in the minors to develop further. When DD was asked about this yesterday he commented something like he wasn't prepared to answer the question. It's a blow to the Tigers defensively but Worth is a decent defensive SS and Iglesias bat won't be missed.

I agree with everything that you have said. If the Tigers go out and get a shortstop it will be a cheap stopgap player. Drew would be a bad choice given the money and draft pick loss.

Just found out that the report on Iglesias being out for 4 months reported by ESPN is based on a Tiger player (not named) saying it. Not the team officials or a doctor. This may be the case but once again ESPN in an attempt to out-scoop everybody neglect this small piece of information. The reason DD had nothing to say at this point is because Iglesias will be a specialist to get a more accurate picture of the injury. Shame on ESPN for not getting right.

Well, we don't know that they didn't get it right. This whole thing has been shrouded in mystery, the Tigers saying that he's running now and looks to be OK, and the player saying virtually nothing.

Every club either says nothing, or lies about the extent of the injury...how many "forearm strains" do we have to see before we know that it's a 90% chance of TJ surgery? I don't believe anyone in these situations until there is a definitive diagnosis and the player either is playing, or on the DL.

Do the Tigers trust Lombardozzi at SS? I know Iglesias has had shin issues since his days in BOS. I wonder if we are now seeing the rationale for the Fister trade, though if that's true wonder if they wish they had him to trade for Gregorius or Franklin right now.

I know that but who besides ESPN is saying Iglesias will miss 4 months because that is what they are saying. If they said based on such and such or it is believed that he will miss 4 months at least that covers the reporting. I'm sorry but I get sick and tire of this type of reporting only because they are stating as a done deal but not giving where the source came from.

No chance Lombardozzi is the every day SS. He may see time there but he won't be the main man.

"Source close to Jose Iglesias" is not the same as Iglesias himself or a willing-to-be-named-online person. For all we know, it could be Scott Boras, still desperately trying to find a taker for Stephen Drew.

Nah, I know Jim Duquette very well. He's not going to pass on bad info like that.

Perhaps he might not, but who's to say his source didn't get and give bad information? Unless we know who The Source is, we can't begin to determine the veracity of the "inside information".

Iglesias himself has now confirmed the stress fractures, but perhaps he, too, is a Boras client, and in league with the conspiracy. You never can trust those evil, horrible agents.
