  • NL Only Keeper League - Trade Offer

Hi everyone. It is great to see the old, familiar names. It's like a homecoming...or reunion of sorts.

Of course, with the advent of spring comes my taking the time to try to figure out how to play this beloved game of ours, once again. It's hard to believe I used to be pretty decent at this stuff. lol

I'm in a 5x5, $280, NL-only, auction league that uses OBP instead of BAvg. (Edited to add: This is a 12 team league, and we have 25 man active rosters with 10 Pitchers, 14 Hitters and 1 extra UT slot that can be a hitter or pitcher. Our 15 reserve players can be rotated in and out of the weekly lineup at will. Each team has $100 of FAAB, supplemented by whatever you do not spend at the auction.)

I don't have a stellar keeper list, so I might be playing for 2015.
I have been offered Dan Haren ($10, 2nd year) and Blackburn (minor leaguer, but $1 when no longer qualified as a Major League Rookie) in exchange for Matt Skole (minor leaguer, but $5 when he no longer qualifies as a Major League Rookie). I tend to prefer keeping hitting prospects with power, especially considering LaRoche is a FA in 2015 and Skole could slide in at 1B or 3B (if they move Zimmerman to 1B). The question is whether acquiring Haren is worth swapping the prospects. I've not done the current calculations, but hitting inflation normally starts around 45 - 60%, and pitching inflation starts around 25 - 30%.

We can keep up to 15 players, plus three minor leaguers on the farm with no budget impact. I also have an offer to deal a final year Bumgarner $13 for P.Corbin $5, C.Dickerson $5, and Kyle Parker $1 - minor leaguer (which I am leaning against).

Please let me know your thoughts about the trades. My current roster is as follows:

    Probable keepers:

    C: Hundley $2 - Final
1B: G.Sanchez $6 - First Year (Claimed in 2014 via the Winter Waiver process)
OF: C.Gomez $1 - Due Extension (probably two years to $11 or three years to $16)
    OF: G.Stanton $20 for 2014 and 2015
    OF C.Yelich $1 - Second Year
    P: M.Bumgarner $13 - Final
P: P.Maholm $6 - Final (would cost me $25 in real money to drop)
    P: C.Morton $4 - Second
    P: AJ Ramos $2 - Second
    P: Tim Stauffer $1 - Second

    Farm:
    Lucas Giolito
    Josh Bell
    Matt Skole

    Possible Keepers
SS: A.Hechevarria $3 - Second (cheap MI with SB possibilities?)
OF: Logan Schafer $1 - Second (possible expanded 4th OF role and handcuff for Gomez. I have an offer to deal him for G.Blanco $4 and A.Varvaro $1, which I am leaning against)
    P: Ross Detwiler $3 - Second
    P: Chad Gaudin $6 - Second

    Planned Drops:
    Josh Rutledge $19 - Second
    Troy Tulowitski $55 - Second
    Ryan Zimmerman $43 - Second
    Justin Upton $57 - Second
Carl Crawford $29 - Extension Decision
    Christian Garcia $1 - Second
    Tom Gorzelanny $2 - Second

Let me know what you think I should do.

    Thanks!

Do the deal that helps you most in 2015 because you ain't contending this year....

    Sorry, I couldn't resist

i'd do the trade, and hope haren does well so you can flip him for something better than skole. skole is 24 and 2 years out - not what you'd call a top prospect. blackburn is a throw-in but not a terrible one. he's a roll-the-dice pitcher with pretty good numbers who is young and might pan out...

Do the Skole deal. Don't do the Bumgarner deal.

Skole may not have a role on that WAS team. Zimmerman is likely moving to 1b. Rendon could well move to 3b.

        P.S. Welcome back!

Agree with bryanbutler on this one - I'd be all over this deal. Skole just isn't that high-end of a prospect that I'd pass on getting a pitcher of Haren's quality and upside at 10.
I'm just here for the baseball.

Yeah I agree with bryanbutler as well. Haren is a much better lottery ticket than Skole at this point.

If you don't think this is your year the Corbin deal is interesting. I wouldn't pull the trigger yet only because you can probably get equivalent value in season if you decide to pack it in. But I do like Corbin a lot.

As an aside, you couldn't pay me to keep Hechevarria in an OBP league.

Nice to hear from you! I hope all is well with you and yours.

I will 3rd the vote on the Haren deal.

How long would you be able to control Corbin? I might do that one.

I'd grab Skole and Haren, and then hold off on trading Bumgarner until the season starts, after which I'd deal Bumgarner for a top prospect. Stud SP should be able to command a stud prospect.

I'd agree with the consensus on the trades.

Regarding your keepers though, you didn't say how many teams. I'm guessing 10 team since you're $280.

Stauffer is not a keeper. If you want him, get him for $1 at the draft & reset his contract. There should be better $1 fliers anyway.

                  I wouldn't keep Ramos either.
G.Sanchez is borderline at best. He's not the 1b solution for the Pirates.

Thanks for all of the advice!

And for the welcome back notes!

Per the heat's comments, I did neglect to include other details about the league. This is a 12 team league, and we have 25 man active rosters with 10 Pitchers, 14 Hitters and 1 extra UT slot that can be a hitter or pitcher. Our 15 reserve players can be rotated in and out of the weekly lineup at will. Each team has $100 of FAAB, supplemented by whatever you do not spend at the auction.

Since I have no closer, I don't mind the gamble on A.J. Ramos. My rationale for keeping Gaby Sanchez is that he earned $6 as a part time player last season, partially due to a solid walk rate. He's currently penciled in as the starter which should result in increased counting stats and an opportunity to earn $10 or more. While that is not exciting, paying $6 for $10 worth of stats is a bargain in a league with 45% - 60% inflation.

I agree that Stauffer probably should be tossed. He's one of my end-game favorites, though so I'm on the fence about keeping him, especially since his swingman status results in him pitching more innings than most RPs. Hechevarria should be better than he is, shouldn't he? Isn't he a speedy guy? Why he does not get more IF hits, bunt singles and SBs is beyond me...but, to Joncarlos' point, it does not make sense to keep him on potential he has not shown.

Regarding Corbin, he is $5 with an extension decision. At most, I'd go one extra year on him. But Bumgarner is a top 5 NL SP, and Dickerson/Parker are question marks, so I can't see making that trade (it feels like a trade deadline deal...not a pre-auction deal).

Your advice helped convince me, so I executed the Haren trade. After giving up Bailey in the deal to acquire Stanton, I felt I needed another keeper SP, so I appreciate you guys for the assist.

My roster is now as follows:

                    C: Hundley $2 - Final
                    1B: G.Sanchez $6 - First Year
OF: C.Gomez $1 - Due Extension (probably two years to $11 or three years to $16)
OF: G.Stanton $20 for 2014 and 2015 (acquired in a recent trade for Homer Bailey $14 - Final and Jim Henderson $5 - Second Year)
                    OF: C.Yelich $1 - Second Year
                    P: M.Bumgarner $13 - Final
                    P: D.Haren $10 - Second
P: P.Maholm $6 - Final (would cost me $25 in real money to drop)
                    P: C.Morton $4 - Second
P: AJ Ramos $2 - Second (acquired in the Stanton trade)

                    Farm:
                    Lucas Giolito
                    Josh Bell
                    Chad Blackburn

                    Possible Keepers
OF: Logan Schafer $1 - Second (possible expanded 4th OF role and handcuff for Gomez)
                    P: Ross Detwiler $3 - Second
                    P: Tim Stauffer $1 - Second

                    Planned Drops:
                    Josh Rutledge $19 - Second
A.Hechevarria $3 - Second (cheap MI with SB possibilities?)
                    Troy Tulowitski $55 - Second
                    Ryan Zimmerman $43 - Second
                    Justin Upton $57 - Second
Carl Crawford $29 - Extension Decision
Christian Garcia $1 - Second (an intriguing player with a ridiculous history of injuries)
                    Tom Gorzelanny $2 - Second
                    Chad Gaudin $6 - Second

I'll keep tinkering around the edges until next Friday (we freeze at 11 pm on March 21st). I've been offered a $5 S.Gennett (2nd) for Morton, as well as an offer of Travis Wood $5 (ext. decision), Chase Headley $18 (ext. decision), and Nicolino (minors) for Bumgarner & Schaffer. However, I'm not even tempted by those options.

                    Thanks again guys!

With 45-60 percent inflation and a cheap list, have you given consideration to Zimm or J-up? I think I'd be strongly considering Zimmerman.

I though Sanchez is supposed to be the weak side of a platoon at 1B. I am tossing him back as I am skeptical he gets more than 300 PAs.
After former Broncos quarterback Brian Griese sprained his ankle and said he was tripped on the stairs of his home by his golden retriever, Bella: “The dog stood up on his hind legs and gave him a push? You might want to get rid of that dog, or put him in the circus, one of the two.”

I am not sure Zimmerman goes for more than $43 in our league...he doesn't get that kind of love. And Tulo continues to be an injury risk, so it is hard to justify keeping him at $55.

I'm now strongly considering letting Stauffer, Ramos and even Maholm go back into the auction pool. I have $25 due to me for winning the SB category last year (I forgot the league voted-in category payouts). Thus, I'm kind of playing with house money if I release Maholm from my freeze list. I still think I am going to keep G.Sanchez. The Pirates have yet to find a better option at 1B, so that could mean 400 ABs with double digit HRs, decent runs/RBI, and a nice .340+ OBP.

These adjustments would make the revised list as follows:

                          Probable Keepers:
                          C: Hundley $2 - Option Year - no extension
                          1B: G.Sanchez $6 - First Year
OF: C.Gomez $1 - Option Year - probably two years to $11 or three years to $16
OF: G.Stanton $20 - Signed through 2015 (acquired in a recent trade for Homer Bailey $14 - Final and Jim Henderson $5 - Second Year)
                          OF: C.Yelich $1 - Second Year
                          P: M.Bumgarner $13 - Final Year of Contract
                          P: D.Haren $10 - Second
                          P: C.Morton $4 - Second

                          Farm:
                          Lucas Giolito
                          Josh Bell
                          Chad Blackburn

                          Possible Keepers:
OF: Logan Schafer $1 - Second (possible expanded 4th OF role and handcuff for Gomez)
P: P.Maholm $6 - Final Year of Contract (will cost me $25 in real money to drop but I have $25 coming to me for a category payout from last season)
P: Ross Detwiler $3 - Second (acquired in the Stanton trade)
P: AJ Ramos $2 - Second (acquired in the Stanton trade)
                          P: Tim Stauffer $1 - Second

                          Planned Drops:
                          Josh Rutledge $19 - Second
                          A.Hechevarria $3 - Second
                          Troy Tulowitski $55 - Second
                          Ryan Zimmerman $43 - Second
                          Justin Upton $57 - Second
Carl Crawford $29 - Option Year

                          Tom Gorzelanny $2 - Second
                          Chad Gaudin $6 - Second

                          Any other thoughts?

If you're confident you can get RZim back at $43 or better, then cut him. But at that inflation level and the ugliness that is 3B, I'd keep him if I weren't 90% sure I could get him back at that price or better. And I'd extend Gomez for three, but weigh that against my Brewer homerness.
I'm just here for the baseball.

I've been leaning towards extending Gomez three seasons, at $16 through 2017. However, I realized that his Brewers contract only runs through 2016. Should that impact my decision about the number of years?
