This is why a good GM always has a backup plan. And in this instance the backup plan is Dice K. Which goes to show you that not all backup plans are created equally.

Would have to think that takes them out of the Nick Franklin trade talk as the M's want pitching and the Mets are now not in the position to trade an arm from the upper levels.

Does it have to be "an arm from the upper levels"? Could it be someone with upside from the lower levels?

Or is Jack Z going for upper level only in a desperate bid to save his job?

good news -- "Kevin Burkhardt @kevinburkhardt
Terry Collins says MRI on Niese shows clean shoulder. Amazingly good news. Showed only some scapula weakness whatever the hell that means."

But for something unrelated to the line drive he absorbed:

Mets placed LHP Jon Niese on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 5, with a left shoulder strain.
Niese left his last outing after being hit in the back by a line drive, but it's his shoulder that's sending him to the DL. The left-hander has seen his velocity drop in recent starts and might be dealing with fatigue. Niese will surely undergo an MRI and/or other exams before it's determined how long he might be out.
