  • Ranking the divisions

I saw this when looking for a decent source of team over/under lines.

If I were to rank Divisions, I am going AL East, NL Central, Al West (don’t let the Houston Astros record take down the rest of the fleet), NL West, AL Central and NL East.

Hunter Stokes (Chief Writer):  Follow The MLB Reports On Twitter These are my predictions as of today for 2014.  Also the Odd Over/Under as listed by the Atlantic Casino In Reno and my ultimate pic…

    Looks good to me.

I'd have the order as NL Central, NL West, AL East, AL West, AL Central, NL East.

Mortal, how dost thou dare not worship at the holy shrine of the Almighty AL East?

Seriously, it's a tough call. I agree with your list except that I'd put the AL East ahead of the NL West, and I admit that I'm a bit prejudiced in favor of the NL Central because I root for one team in it while living in the home city of another.

When you ignore the dregs and just go by top 3s:

        ALE: BOS, TB, NYY
ALW: OAK, TEX, LAA (could argue these guys are #1)
        -----
NLW: LAD, ARI, SF (lacking a solid 3, could argue Padres here)
        -----
ALC: DET, KC, CLE (Indians are a little underrated)
NLC: STL, CIN, PIT (too bad the Pirates have taken a big step back, CIN regressing too)
NLE: WSH, ATL, PHI (if you just ranked 2, these guys would be a lot higher, could see argument to make them 5)

If you look at the Vegas betting lines for wins:

They have four divisions as superior to the others, and it's the same four whether you rank the top three teams or all five in each division:

AL West: Oak, LAA, Tex average 87.7 wins, overall avg 81.4
AL East: TB, Bos, NYY average 86.8 wins, overall avg 83.6
NL Central: StL, Pit, Cin average 86.5 wins, overall avg 81.5
NL West: LAD, SF, Ari average 86.3 wins, overall avg 82.6
          ------
NL East: Atl, Was, Phi average 83.7 wins, overall avg 78.8
AL Central: Det, Cin, KC average 83.0 wins, overall avg 79.5
"Jesus said to them, 'Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.'"

Interesting to see how much WAR and Vegas disagree by division. I wonder what the biggest differences are by team...and whether the top 5 differences positive and negative will hold up - would one make money by betting on all ten?
