  • Greatest paper team ever?

This guy (not me) set a record for wins, only to be nosed out in the finals 7-6-1, by the 4th place team. He claims this is, on paper, the best team ever assembled in a reasonably league. What do you all think?

    16 team H2H

    The batting lineup:

    1. LF Shin-Soo Choo (L)
    2. RF Yasiel Puig (R)
    3. 1B Joey Votto (L)
    4. DH Miguel Cabrera (R)
    5. SS Hanley Ramirez (R)
    6. 2B Jason Kipnis (L)
    7. CF Wil Myers (R)
    8. 3B Matt Carpenter (L)
    9. C Travis d'Arnaud (R)

    The bench:
    1B/OF Corey Hart (R)
    1B/OF Brandon Moss (L)
    1B/OF Chris Carter (R)
    1B/OF Jon Singleton (L)
    SS Starlin Castro (R)

    The rotation:
    Gerrit Cole (R)
    Alex Cobb (R)
    Mike Minor (L)
    Michael Wacha (R)
    Sonny Gray (R)
    Marco Estrada (R)

    The closer:
    Koji Uehara (R)
    Ad Astra per Aspera

I thought all mixed league teams looked like that. Doesn't look all that impressive to me.

Hart didn't play at all, Carter was a BA nightmare while hitting for power, D'Arnaud only came up at the end of the year, Uehara didn't take over as closer until June (a week after I traded him in one league ), Castro was a dud, Gray came up late, Singleton was a non-contributor.

      I don't see greatness here.

cleo--It all depends on the depth of the league. 10 teams, 12 teams, this team could be assembled fairly easily. 20 teams, like Mock One, or 18, like RJEL, not so simple.

9 h/7 p, 16 tm mixed, crazy shallow. Does not look all that special to me.

16-team mixed? That's a pretty good team. Best ever? I doubt it, but my guess is that it would win most leagues of that stripe.

Well, I am in the same type of league--16 team h2h. I don't think it is as shallow as people think, but there is a lot of star potential in a league that size. I was in the same boat last year, run away point leader, but lost in the finals to the 4th place team. I think my team is as good or better than his. We run 30 man rosters, and I had strong depth, but I'll just post my starters as a point of comparison:

            HItters:

            C-Carlos Santana
            C-Russell Martin
            1b-Joey Votto
            2b-Dustin Pedroia
            ss-Jean Segura
            MIF-Ian Desmond
            3b-Adrian Beltre
            LF-Matt Holliday
            CF-Austin Jackson
            RF-Shane Victorino
            UOF-Coco Crisp
            UTIL-Miguel Cabrera
            UTIL-Alex Rios

            Pitchers:
            Clayton Kershaw
            Anibal Sanchez
            Jose Fernadez
            Shelby Miller
            Matt Moore
            Fransico Liriano
            Lance Lynn
            Koji Uehera
            Rex Brothers

I lost to a clearly worse team, but part of the problem was that I did not have the guts to trade my young stud arms away from veteran arms that would still be pitching in my finals. Jose Ferendez and Shelby Miller were benched before it mattered most. I knew it was coming, but thought I had a big enough gap in talent to overcome it.

Great hitting, value pitching. In a 16-team league, though, how on earth did he get MCab-HanRam-Votto-Kipnis-Puig?

Sour, your 13 h/9 p with 30 man rosters vs his 9 hitters/7 pitchers is pretty significant difference.

To make that claim, i think that owner hasn't played in many leagues.

Two guys on his bench didn't get a single at-bat in the majors last season.

I can add guys like Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron to my bench and they'll look pretty impressive, too.

owner in my NL-only 12-team has this potential keeper list - price, then HQ projected price for these parameters. assume these 11 for now

The 2001 Seattle Mariners won 116 games, and failed to even make it to the World Series. Need to win a league before I figure a team into the discussion of best team, paper or otherwise.
Considering his only baseball post in the past year was bringing up a 3 year old thread to taunt Hornsby and he's never contributed a dime to our hatpass, perhaps?

I traded him Votto for McCutchen.
