  • Baseball's first African-American player was...

    William Edward White in 1879?!

On June 22, 1937, Joe Louis knocked out James Braddock with a right to the jaw to become the world heavyweight champion. At a time when Major League...

Since the 1879 game was unearthed a decade ago, questions about White’s race have clouded his legacy. If he didn’t want other people to think of him as black, did he actually break the sports world’s most infamous racial barrier? Or is the reality of his racial heritage, and the difficult personal issues it no doubt forced him to confront, enough to qualify him as a pioneer? Should William Edward White be recognized during Black History Month alongside Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson and other groundbreaking African-Americans?

see also the early Cuban players, who could play if they were light-skinned enough to pass for Spanish.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

It's true that he couldn't reveal his heritage, but if no one could tell....
Every vintage drafter definitely knows Will White.
This is a different William White. This guy played in a single game.

Interesting story. But probably unknown to most, there were other blacks that played in MLB prior to Jackie Robinson. Moses Fleetwood (Fleet) Walker was previously considered to be the 1st black to play in MLB. He played for the Toledo team in the American Assn (a major league) in 1884. He was a catcher, played in 42 games and batted .263. His brother, Welday, also played and was 4 for 18. I think there were others, but I'm not sure.

uh, that's Bill White, not the Cardinals 1B and longtime Yankees announcer, though

and if you're scoring at home, this black guy named White who went to Brown played for the Greys.

                he was colored, alright!
