Not sure adding a guy reputed to be the biggest asshole in baseball to te always volatile Red Sox clubhouse is such a great idea...

He may be an asshole, but have you noticed that the teams he plays for tend to do pretty well on the field and that he always seems to be in demand? Everything I've ever read about him coming from former teammates is that they all hated him until they became teammates with him, then they "got it" and understood why his former teammates loved/hated him.

And if the Red Sox clubhouse is already volatile, what's a little more volatility? It seemed to work for them last year.

We'll see, Ray. The clubhouses he's been in haven't been in the unique Boston or New York media markets. I suspect that there will be issues aplenty before this one is done.

I'm reasonably sure that there will be fireworks, much created by the infamous Boston media, but if the team wins, it won't matter. Even if the clubhouse becomes the Bronx Zoo (which I'm sure you remember) or the A's of the early to mid-1970s, it doesn't matter if you win.

Clubhouse chemistry is a great thing, but, as I wrote in my notes when the subject came up at the First Pitch Forum, "All the clubhouse and on-field camaraderie in the world means nothing if the guys...can't...play."

And of course, how a volatile clubhouse is portrayed by the media depends on whether the team is winning. If you're winning, it's "spirited"; if you're losing, it's "divisive".
