According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Pirates will call up top pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow for a start this weekend against the Cubs.
That'll be a tough first assignment for the 22-year-old right-hander, but there's obviously still a ton to like here from a fantasy perspective. Glasnow, a consensus top-15 prospect leading into the 2016 season, has registered a lights-out 1.78 ERA with 113 strikeouts in 96 innings this year at Triple-A Indianapolis. Control remains an issue and he's still working on a third pitch, but Glasnow has a great fastball and curve and should be owned in most standard fantasy leagues. He probably has around 60-70 innings left for the year.

I think Pirates ownership is starting to budget for signing Gerrit Cole this off-season when he becomes arbitration eligible for the first time. Thus the cost saving measures being taken now. The poor performances and high costs (by Pittsburgh standards) of Liriano and Niese made both expendable. These two trades combined with the Melancon for Rivero deal will shed 23.5 million from the payroll. The Bucs will need a little bit of that money for Tony Watson as well since he is also arbitration eligible for the first time. Which is why i'm surprised that they are allowing him to close for these final two months while they still have a capable free-agent-to-be closer in Feliz and since it will most likely drive up Watson's arbitration cost.Last edited by madducks; 08-02-2016, 12:55 AM.“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”

The Pirates signed 33 year old 3B David Freese to a two year $10.5 million extension with a club option for 2019. Pittsburgh now has 6 of 8 position players signed through 2019 with CF Andrew McCutchen (2018) and 1B John Jaso (2017) being the exceptions.
If Josh Bell wins the 1B job this could be the Pirates 2017 opening day lineup along with their contracts:
C - Francisco Cervelli thru 2019 ($9 million/10.5/11.5)
1B - Josh Bell (rookie)
2B - Josh Harrison thru 2020 ($7.5 million/10/10.5 option/11.5 option)
SS - Jung Ho Kang thru 2019 ($2.75 million/3/5.5 option)
3B - David Freese thru 2019 ($6.25 million/4.25/6 option)
LF - Starling Marte thru 2021 ($5 million/7.5/10/11.5 option/12.5 option)
CF - Andrew McCutchen thru 2018 ($14 million/14.5 option)
RF - Gregory Polanco thru 2023 ($1 million/3.5/5.5/8/11/12.5 option/13.5 option)Last edited by madducks; 08-24-2016, 01:42 AM.“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”

I don't know if that wins you any championships, but that's a hell of a lineup for the price. $45m for an above average lineup and a theoretically young and good rotation... it's too bad there won't be an ace to spend the extra money on.In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Uh-oh!
"Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole will leave the team on Sunday and fly to Los Angeles to have his sore right elbow examined by a specialist, sources told the Tribune-Review.
Cole will be examined by orthopedic surgeon Neal ElAttrache, who also is the Los Angeles Dodgers' head physician."

Someone just pointed out that Juan Nicasio has given up only 4 ER since July and none in the last three weeks. Yet, he's anonymous. What are the Pirate plans for him?
