"I'm not going on the DL," Cuddyer said. "You can put that in bold letters."

Some are just old (Cuddy and Morneau), some have bad luck (Cargo), and some have a defect that should have been years ago (Tulo). Now with Tulo, there's actually some hope that this surgery can provide him with some stability that he's been missing for years...

Rockies trainer Keith Dugger offers an optimistic prognosis on Troy Tulowitzki. He's in wait-and-see mode regarding outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and left-hander starter Brett Anderson.

Tulo underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn labrum in his left hip and faces a recovery period of about five months. It's the same surgery former first baseman Todd Helton underwent in the summer of 2012.

According to Dugger, Tulowitzki emerged from the operation in good shape.

"It was actually pretty cut and dry as far has hip surgeries go," he said Saturday. "Hopefully it provides some stability that allows us to continue to do some of the same strengthening exercises that he's been doing."

Even since Tulowitzki tore a left quadriceps tendon in 2008, he's had issues with muscle strength and stability. Dugger is hopeful the operation will help change some of that.

"You always have a little bit of instability, but there are plenty of professional athletes who take care of the tear and have very successful careers and have no issues," Dugger said.

That may be some systemic bad luck, though. I don't even mean to imply that he's weak or fragile as if it's necessarily some fault of his own, but some players just get injured more than others due to a myriad of factors, not the least of which are conditioning or playstyle or "supplements". For the foreseeable future, I think Cargo is firmly in the "Invest with Caution: High-Risk-High-Reward Ahead" category.

            • Rockies acquired RHPs David Hale and Gus Schlosser from the Braves in exchange for Cs Jose Briceno and Chris O’Dowd.
Hale, 27, has posted a 3.02 ERA but has struck out just 58 over 98 1/3 innings the last two seasons with the Braves. He'll be going from a pretty pitcher-friendly park to an extremely hitter-friendly one, but his groundball tendencies should help at least. Hale should compete for a spot in the Rockies' rotation.

Kidding aside it has to be Hawkins. If nothing else, they will want to depress the arbitration value of Ottavino and co.

                  • 03.13: Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Thursday that he'd be confident in using Adam Ottavino as his closer on days when LaTroy Hawkins needs a break. ("Adam has 'back end of the game' stuff," Weiss said. "There are times when we'll have to use a closer by committee, and he would certainly be one of those options." Hawkins enters 2015 as the unquestioned closer after a surprisingly solid 2014 campaign, but he's 42 and retiring after the season so the Rockies need to groom a replacement. Ottavino appears to be clearly second in line ahead of Rex Brothers and could eventually take over the ninth inning at some point in 2015.)

                    • That can't be a real Rockies idea since it actually makes sense.

                      • Rockies released RHP Jhoulys Chacin.
It comes as a big surprise, as the 27-year-old right-hander had been expected to open the season as the second starter in the Rockies' rotation behind Jorge De La Rosa. Chacin clearly isn't at full strength, though, following the rotator cuff injury that ended his 2014 season prematurely. He posted a troublesome 1-7 record and 5.40 ERA over 63 1/3 innings in 2014 and wasn't much better in Cactus League play, with a 6.52 ERA and 2.07 WHIP in 9 2/3 frames. He'll attempt to latch on elsewhere.

                          • Primary setup guy doesn't always = second up for closer, especially if said guy is a lefty.

                            • yes, granted. if he does well, though, it gives him a leg up, if only because it means more appearances and so being in front of the pitching coach & manager more.
